Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate Story Plot
Not much is known about Dragon Quest XII’s story, as all DQ games are self-contained, similar to the other legendary Japanese RPG series Final Fantasy. However, during the game’s reveal on the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Livestream, series creator Yuji Horii hinted at the game containing darker tones, describing it as “Dragon Quest for adults.” The reveal trailer ominously also asks, “What is the purpose of life?” further hinting at the newest entry having more deep and mature themes.

Currently, no gameplay footage is available, but Horii during the livestream also hinted that the game may stray away from the series staple of turn-based combat. This goes in hand with how the new game seems to be drastically different from the previous releases. Hori explains the subtitle, “The Flames of Fate,” stating that it was about “having options, to choose your own way how to play.” He also stated that they will be changing the Command Battle completely which everyone has grown accustomed to. “It’s not like we’re gonna get rid of Command, but we’re gonna make some changes.”
