Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Gameplay
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will stay true to the classic gameplay of the original titles. Players will take on the roles of Erdrick's descendants, leading their parties on a grand adventure across towns, caves, and various landscapes—helping people, uncovering secrets, and facing a looming evil that threatens the world. The remake features traditional turn-based combat alongside modern quality-of-life improvements to enhance the overall experience.
The turn-based combat lets players take turns choosing from a variety of actions each round. Every character has unique roles and skills, but all party members can use options like “Fight,” “Run,” “Spell,” and “Item.” You’ll control each party member individually, and encounters with enemies occur randomly while exploring the overworld.
Some enemies can even be recruited to join your party. Victory is achieved by reducing the enemy’s HP to zero, earning experience points to level up. The game features a large overworld map with a top-down perspective, allowing players to explore towns, dungeons, and other areas across a vast open world.
Combat Adjustments
While DRAGON QUEST I’s party size remains solo, the game has increased the number of enemies players take on during combat. Instead of the original 1v1 battles, players will now face multiple enemies at once, keeping the game’s consistency with the players being a “solo protagonist.” In exchange, the Hero will have access to multi-target spells to balance out the new combat format.
On the other hand, DRAGON QUEST II’s party size will be increased from 3 to 4, adding the Princess of Cannock as a new playable character. Another notable addition to the game’s modernized list of features is the ability to increase the speed of combat mid-fight. This directly addresses a big part of the previous title’s requirements for grinding.
New Underwater Region for DRAGON QUEST II
This remake also includes a new location for DRAGON QUEST II, taking players under the sea. The Ocean Floor is an expansive, uncharted underwater region that players can explore using their new submersible ship.
They can visit Mersea, an underwater town that is inhabited by Merfolk and is under threat from the forces of Hargon. Players can also explore new dungeons and hidden areas, as well as the sacred Mermaid Sanctuary.
Aside from these new locations, players will also encounter new enemies and bosses. One of these is Mariella, a champion of Hargon who is introduced as the main villain of the Ocean Floor section of the game. Storylines and quests related to the Ocean Floor will also expand the existing lore of the Edrick Trilogy.
Although DRAGON QUEST I will not have brand new regions, the game will expand upon its existing areas that were often skipped or unexplored in the original game, adding dungeons and hidden zones. These places will also have additional storylines and quests, which will further deepen the lore of the players’ journey in Alefgard.
Progression Changes
Similar to other Dragon Quest games, including Dragon Quest II, but new to the original, is the addition of sigils. These no longer simply allow players to progress past certain points in the story, but now also enable diversification of strategies in combat by upgrading certain attacks and spells.
Mini medals have also been added, serving as one of the game’s primary collectible items and used to exchange for items such as equipment and spell scrolls.
Multiple difficulty modes are also introduced, allowing players to set the urgency of their journey, similar to Dragon Quest III.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Story Plot
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will reimagine both the first two stories of The Erdrick Trilogy in DQ 1. You are on a quest to stop the once defeated diabolical Dragonlord has risen and unleashed hordes of monsters on the realm once more. Now, descendant of Erdrick, it is your destiny to defeat this new evil and rescue the world from its plight!
In DQ 2, many years have passed since Alefgard was saved at the hero's hand, and you play as his descendants who once again must save the three kingdoms from the darkness that stirs once more, and now you play as the young princes and princesses of Erdrick's lineage
