Danganronpa 2x2 Gameplay

Image

Danganronpa 2x2 follows a two-part structure. Periods of exploration and interaction outside of cases, and Class Trials that test the player’s ability to spot contradictions and marshal evidence. Outside of trials, the player moves through locations, speaks with other characters, inspect environments for clues, and uses items found during searches to progress investigations; these segments also include Free Time or Daily Life interactions that reward the player with resources that can be exchanged for items that could benefit the player during trials.

When a murder is discovered, the player examines the crime scene and other relevant areas to gather physical evidence and testimony, and must piece together which facts will be useful in the upcoming trial. Collected items and hidden collectibles (used as in-game currency or to unlock bonuses) are tracked for later use.

Class Trials are interspersed with mini-games. The central mechanic is the Nonstop Debate, in which characters speak continuously and the player must interrupt contradictions or highlighted weak points by selecting and figuratively firing the correct piece of evidence (so-called Truth Bullets). Other trial formats include letter-matching puzzle segments (Hangman’s Gambit), a rhythm mini-game that breaks an opponent’s resistance, one-on-one rebuttals, and a logic-navigation sequence (Logic Dive) where the player chooses routes to reach conclusions.

A new route is included in Danganronpa 2x2, which will provide gameplay content similar in scope to the original. Players are expected to use the systems mentioned above in both routes.

Danganronpa 2x2 Story

Image

Sixteen high-school students, each possessing exceptional talents (called "Ultimates"), are brought to a remote tropical island named Jabberwock Island for what is presented as a school trip. They are accompanied by a teacher-figure called Usami. The trip’s purpose is disrupted when Monokuma, the series’ mascot, takes control and traps the students.

He declares that in order to leave the island, they must participate in a killing game. Whenever one of them is murdered, the others must investigate and then hold a Class Trial to identify the culprit. If they fail, the innocents are executed; if they succeed, only the murderer is executed.

In Danganronpa 2x2, the original scenario from Goodbye Despair is included with visual and presentation enhancements, but there is also a newly written alternate story route. This alternate route, according to the game’s website, features the same setting and cast of characters but diverges due to a "certain incident" that leads to different victims, culprits, and twists in how the mystery unfolds.
