Resident Evil 5 Remake looks to be next in line for Capcom’s string Resident Evil remakes, but when might it come out? Is it actually next in line, or perhaps it’s Code Veronica? Read on to find out our theories for the next Resident Evil remake.

Resident Evil 5 Remake Release Date and Time

Most Likely Between 2026 to 2028

As much as we’re all excited for Resident Evil (RE) 5 Remake, it’s highly unlikely that it will not be the next Resident Evil game that will come out. After the success of Resident Evil 7 and 8, a finale to the Ethan Winters duology that ushered in the series’ maiden first-person perspective game, Resident Evil 9 has been rumored to be in development. Although both games, RE5R and RE9, surely have different development teams, Capcom will most likely try to space their releases apart a year or two, as they have done so in the past with the back-to-back RE2 and RE3 remakes.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, and Resident Evil 8 Village came out in 2017 and 2021 respectively. If history is to be repeated, then RE9 might come out in 2025, completing the cycle of four year gaps. However, insider rumors have popped up that RE9 has “the biggest budget the series has ever seen.” (via Gamerant) This could push the release a year or two back if development is as big as reported. As such, RE5R will also be adjusted further back to accommodate the spacing.

Or perhaps it’s wrong to assume that RE9 will take precedence over RE5 Remake, and that RE5 will release first before the new numbered mainline title. Capcom could also very well be in a pattern of releasing a numbered title (RE7 2017), and then releasing two classic remakes (RE2 2019, RE3 2020). It seems to flow rather well, with RE8 that released in 2021 and with RE4R that released two years later in 2023. If that will be the case, then RE fans will have much to worry about the state of RE5R if Capcom were to proceed to treat it similarly to RE3R, bringing about substantial changes and a very short playtime which disappointed fans.

Regardless of which one eventually comes out first, the release of RE9 and RE5 Remake would make the perfect pairing, as both games will heavily feature Chris Redfield as a protagonist. RE5 had Chris and Sheva as playable characters, while RE9 has been heavily hinted to be Chris taking back the protagonist mantle from the ending events of RE8 (Rose had her DLC, it’s okay, she can rest easy). If the two RE games were to release back-to-back, Chris Redfield will once again be the Resident Evil mascot, and all boulders worldwide will continually shudder in fear.

Resident Evil 5 Remake Theories

Why Not Code Veronica Instead?

Spoilers for the end of Resident Evil 4 Remake and the Ada Wong Separate Ways DLC

Many fans are clamoring that the next Resident Evil remake should be Code Veronica. However, all signs left by the games before hint to Resident Evil 5 Remake being next. At the end of Resident Evil 4, Ada Wong, was seen communicating with Albert Wesker, the iconic Resident Evil villain. Wesker, being a signature antagonist for multiple RE games, is the main one in Resident Evil 5. This could easily be dismissed as just a tease for the future, however:

In the Separate Ways DLC where players controlled Ada Wong, the ending expands and shows more hints of Wesker’s plans, showing a wide holographic screen with the blurred image of Africa in the middle. The entirety of Resident Evil 5 takes place in a fictional region heavily based in West Africa. Put two and two together, and one can conclude that all signs hint for the next remake to be Resident Evil 5.
