NBA 2K24 Review
NBA 2K24 First Impressions
From all the information shared by the developers and the gameplay footage we have seen from the different content creators invited to the NBA 2K24 Community Day, it seems that NBA 2K24 will be a much improved basketball game compared to its predecessors. With a brand new animation system and tons of gameplay improvements, NBA 2K24 seems to have taken a bigger step in the right direction than they normally do with each NBA 2K game.
Animations look smoother and more realistic than ever, dribble combos look fluid and natural, and good defense seems to be a lot more rewarding to play. The brand new MyPlayer builder gives you less points to work with which will improve gameplay by diversifying builds and playstyles. A brand new optional MyCareer adventure awaits your MyPlayer and is centered on your quest to become the greatest of all time. All these new features leave us excited to hit the courts in NBA 2K24.
Everything We Know So Far About NBA 2K24
NBA 2K24 Story Plot
As with every NBA 2K game, NBA 2K24 will feature a brand new storyline for your MyPlayer. As of September 7, 2023, no information has been shared about MyCareer’s plot. Because of how the game mode has been in every NBA 2K game, it is safe to assume that the whole point of MyCareer is to once again experience going through an NBA career with a unique storyline as a generational talent starting from your rookie year.
NBA 2K24 Gameplay
ProPLAY Technology
NBA 2K24 will use the new ProPLAY technology for the first time this year. This is a gameplay system that directly integrates the exact moves of NBA players during real basketball games into the game.We can expect to get animations that are exactly the same as how an NBA player would move in real life. The new animations will include dribble moves, jumpshots, dunks, and even celebrations.
Each NBA player will feel a lot more unique and the feature will give 2K a more realistic feel. Additionally, 2K has also added a lot more animations that were not present in previous 2K games.
Playstation vs Xbox
For the first time ever, NBA 2K will have a crossplay feature for Xbox and PS5, allowing players from one platform to play with or against players from another platform. According to 2K developer Evan, players will have seamless access to a social menu that will allow players to see which platform players are playing on and join their game.s.
This is a welcome change as there has always been some beef between the 2K communities of Xbox and Playstation on which platform plays the game better. This feature may finally help settle the debate.
Improved Adrenaline Boost System
Adrenaline Boosts were first introduced in NBA 2K23 to combat the “Left Righting” problem that plagued previous 2Ks. Before, you would lose an Adrenaline Bar whenever you would speed boost on offense. This drastically limited a dribbler’s capabilities as they could only quickly reposition twice before being significantly nerfed for the rest of the possession.
In NBA 2K24, however, Adrenaline Bars will not be spent when combo dribbling or speed boosting. Instead, ball handlers will lose an Adrenaline Bar when they get bumped by their defender. Additionally, instead of a speed nerf when you lose your Adrenaline, you will suffer heavy attribute losses.
This seems like another praiseworthy change from the 2K devs as dribbling felt very limited in 2K23. This change will reward both good ball handlers who lose their defenders, and good defenders who are able to stay in front of their opponents.
Takeover Menu
Takeovers are no longer assigned when players make their builds. Instead, players will receive a Takeover menu in real time whenever a player is heating up in a game. The Takeover will let you pick between finishing, shooting, playmaking, defense/rebounding, or physicals. These Takeovers will boost the attributes related to whichever Takeover the player picks. This is a good update to the Takeover feature as different in-game situations require different solutions and being able to pick which attributes are boosted will help in this regard.
Badges
This is the first time that 2K is changing the badge system drastically since its introduction in 2K15. Players will now either gain or lose badges depending on their performance. For example, shooting a lot of deep threes will get you the Limitless Range badge. On the other hand, if you have not shot any deep threes in a few games, you will lose that badge. Additionally, badges in NBA 2K24 are categorized into tiers, with S tier badges being the hardest to obtain and the easiest to lose, and C tier badges being the inverse.
MyPlayer Builder
NBA 2K24 builds are a little bit more specialized in a sense that they can do one or two things very well and be average or bad at the rest. This is yet another welcome change as one of the biggest problems with NBA 2K23 were the 6’9 Demigod builds that could do almost everything well. This change will allow players to diversify builds and have different responsibilities in-game, unlike in 2K23 where everybody does a little bit of everything. Additionally builds will have more accurate and descriptive build names, allowing other players to better understand the skills and drawbacks of a certain guy.
Rep System
Developer Mike Wang revealed that the Rep System is back for NBA 2K24. The different rep levels are as follows: Rookie 1, Rookie 2, Rookie 3, Starter 1, Starter 2, Starter 3, Veteran 1, Veteran 2, Veteran 3, and Top 10. That is all the information we have on the Rep System for now and we will have to wait for the game’s release to see exactly how this affects the game.
Pro Pass
NBA 2K24 will be introducing Pro Passes, a brand new battle pass system, in place of the previous season rewards system. This year, players will not only have to grind for the rewards, they will have to pay for them too. Considering that NBA 2K games are already microtransaction heavy games, this is not really a change that fans of the franchise would be excited about.
