Xbox to “Revisit” Big, Old Titles

Phil Spencer has a List of Things He Wants Made Again

In the most recent episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Phil Spencer spoke about how he has “a list of things from my memories in history that I want to see made again.” Fresh from the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King (ABK), Spencer now tinkers with the idea of bringing back old franchises from both ABK’s and previously held portfolio.

The hosts quizzed the CEO about the possibility of bringing back iconic franchises like Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, and Starcraft, and Spencer responded: “I want to make sure that when we’re going back and visiting something, that we do it with our complete ability… So I’m going to start with the teams, and what are they passionate about. That's why I'm excited to go on these visits. And then we'll look at it.”

With the recent completion of Microsoft’s purchase of ABK, there is now a staggering amount of IPs under the tech giant. Spencer explained that he’s careful with what franchises they would revisit, and said, “It's daunting. I feel that we have to be a great custodian for the content that we touch.” It’s worth noting that before ABK, Xbox had 23 game development studios already and a wealth of IP. ABK brought iconic IPs with it: Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Spyro, Candy Crush– to name a few.

While Spencer did not confirm anything concrete, he left the hosts with a nugget of hope: “If people want to–if teams want to go back and revisit some of the things that we have and do a full focus on it, I'm going to be all in on that.”

Now, imagine how a next-gen Starcraft or Guitar Hero would look like. Let the devs know, and you never know, maybe the gaming giant might just “revisit” them.
