Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O Releases on Steam this Winter
Virtua Fighter Series’ First Steam Debut
SEGA is bringing the highly popular Virtua Fighter series to Steam for the first time in the form of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. This upcoming remaster is the fifth major iteration of the 18-year-old game, Virtua Fighter 5. The actual release date was not revealed yet, but SEGA teased that it will launch this winter.
Despite releasing numerous versions of this game, SEGA described Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O as "the ultimate remaster of the classic 3D fighter." The game promises rollback netcode support, ensuring smooth online play even with a subpar internet connection. The game also supports 4K graphics, showcases updated high-resolution textures, and increases its framerate to 60 fps, making the game as fluid and beautiful as ever.
Players can choose from classic modes such as Rank Match, Arcade, Training, and Versus. The developers also added two new modes. The first one is the ability to create "custom online tournaments and leagues with up to 16 players," while the Spectator Mode allows them to watch other players and learn some cool moves or new techniques to defeat their opponents.
Audience reception on Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O’s YouTube trailer is quite positive, despite being the fifth iteration of the game. One of the fans mentioned, "Am I going to buy another copy of Virtua Fighter 5? You damn right." Others are also happy that the game is being released to PC. However, some fans are still requesting for VF6. "Once the world is a radioactive wasteland with no internet after WW3, Sega will finally release VF6," a fan remarked.
Previously Expected As Virtua Fighter 6
Initially teased earlier this month via an interview with VGC, many fans expected that SEGA is developing Virtua Fighter 6. In the same interview, Justin Scarpone, SEGA’s global head of transmedia, mentioned that "we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed."
However, this expectation was quashed as Virtua Series Fighter 5 R.E.V.O was posted on Steam on November 22 with upgraded visuals, new modes, and the integration of rollback netcode.
The Return of the Classic Fighting Game
Virtua Fighter 5 made its debut on SEGA Lindbergh, an arcade platform, in July 2006 before it was ported to PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007. J6 or Judgement 6 sent invitations to the best fighters around the world to compete in the Fifth World Fighting Tournament. In the original game, players can choose from 17 fighters, while the later versions, including Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O, host 19 playable characters.
After its initial release, Virtua Fighter 5 underwent updates and remasters to improve the original game and make it available to wider audiences. These games are:
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 R (2008)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (2010)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (2021)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O (2024)
With updated visuals and modern features, Virtual Fighter 5 R.E.V.O is still exciting news to fans of the VF series.
