Monster Hunter Outlanders has confirmed the return of several classic weapon types! Read on to find out which ones made the cut!
Long Sword and Dual Blades Confirmed for Monster Hunter Outlanders
Additional Monster Hunter Outlanders Weapon Types Coming “in the Future”
Monster Hunter Outlanders unveiled its initial lineup of weapons earlier today on social media. Leading the charge are some of the series’ iconic choices:
⚫︎ Long Sword
⚫︎ Dual Blades
⚫︎ Light Bowgun
⚫︎ Bow
⚫︎ Lance
Notably absent from this list are several weapon types featured in the mainline games—the Sword and Shield, Switch Axe, Insect Glaive, Great Sword, Charge Blade, Hammer, Hunting Horn, and Gunlance. However, the developers confirmed that additional weapon types will be introduced in the future. It remains unclear, however, whether these will arrive before or after the game’s official launch.
Monster Hunter Now, an augmented reality mobile game co-developed by Niantic, launched in September 2023. The game debuted with just six weapon types, with additional weapons added roughly every three months. A similar update cadence could potentially apply to Monster Hunter Outlanders.
Monster Hunter Outlanders has adapted its combat system to optimize it for mobile touchscreens. While the Producers’ Interview didn’t provide details on control schemes or individual weapon mechanics, the available footage and screenshots suggest that many core gameplay elements will remain intact. Weapon moves like the Bow’s rapid combo shots and the Long Sword’s Iai Slash appear to be present, though the specific implementation of these techniques on touchscreens remains to be seen.

Monster Hunter Outlanders Could Expand its Arsenal with New and Old Weapon Types

While the initial weapon lineup is promising, many fans are eagerly anticipating the inclusion of more diverse weapon types. Given the live-service model of Monster Hunter Outlanders, there's hope that the developers might revisit weapons from past titles. These could include the Tonfa and Magnet Spike from Monster Hunter Frontier, the Accel Axe from Monster Hunter Explore, and the Medium Bowgun briefly featured in Monster Hunter Tri.
Both Monster Hunter Frontier and Monster Hunter Explore were discontinued in 2019. As a result the aforementioned weapons are currently unavailable to players. Meanwhile, the Medium Bowgun was exclusive to Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii and did not carry over to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, the expanded version of the game.
It remains to be seen whether these weapons will make their way into Monster Hunter Outlanders or if the game will introduce entirely new weapon types for players to experiment with. Either way, it’s an intriguing possibility that fans will simply have to wait for when the game launches and receives future updates.
