Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment is reportedly making another game set in the Titanfall universe, but it isn’t Titanfall 3. Read on to learn more about Respawn’s latest project.

Respawn is Making a New Game, But It Isn’t Titanfall 3

"They’re not making Titanfall 3, they just straight up aren’t."

Respawn Entertainment—creator of the widely popular free-to-play multiplayer Apex Legends— is reportedly working on a new game set in the Titanfall universe with Titanfall game director Steve Fukuda at the helm.

Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb revealed more details on this "original IP" during the latest episode of Game Mess Mornings. "There are always [conversations] about Titanfall 3. Whenever I do look into it, they’re not making Titanfall 3, they just straight up aren’t," said Grubb on the topic of Respawn’s latest ventures.

"This game, as it stands today, as far as I understand, is a ‘Titanfall game’, it’s in the Titanfall universe," he continued. "But everyone I talk to keeps saying, well it’s not, don’t get in you’re mind that it’s Titanfall 3, like a game with online multiplayer and a single-player campaign. I’m like, well wait, what, then how is, what is this game? I still don’t know."

Grubb went on to confirm that this project, whatever it may end up being, has already progressed past the early prototyping phase of development, meaning that it’s now considered to be a "real project". He also cautioned that it is still very much a prototype, however.

In The Wake of Respawn’s Recent Layoffs and Cancellations

All this talk of a new IP gracing Respawn’s catalog is in the wake of the Titanfall developer’s recent layoffs and project cancellations. Earlier in February, EA canceled one of Respawn’s Titanfall projects—a single-player experience called Titanfall Legends—alongside other projects like Apex Legends Mobile, Battlefield Mobile, and an untitled Star Wars Mandalorian FPS. This mass cancellation also saw the laying off of around 5% of Respawn’s staff—specifically those working on the canceled projects— amounting to around 670 people.

Jeff Grubb had the following to say regarding the likelihood of the new project being Titanfall 3 in light of said layoffs: "And then I’m reminded that they were working on Titanfall 3 essentially with Titanfall Legends, which was going to be a part of Apex Legends, and they pulled the rug out from underneath that, so it seems very unlikely that they would change their strategy and go back and actually end up making Titanfall 3."
