In the ever-evolving world of fighting games, collaborations and crossover events are often a topic of keen interest among fans. However, not all ideas gain traction with the industry's key figures. This was recently highlighted in a Twitter (X) exchange involving Katsuhiro Harada, director and producer at Bandai Namco and known for the popular fighting game series, Tekken. A user from the platform, on June 12, proposed the addition of characters from the classic 3D fighting game series Bloody Roar into Tekken. The post read:

"Harada-San I think if u add a character from BLOODY ROAR would be nice because its a 3D game like Tekken, and any character U add from bloody roar will have devil form like Kazoya And Jin. I think this is good Idea. Long the Tiger OR Yugo the Wolf. Thanks."

In a detailed response, Harada addressed the user's suggestion, providing insight into the complexities of game collaborations from a producer's perspective. He stated, "I see some of you regularly suggest this collaboration, although it is very rare. If it were simply a matter of individual preference, it might be a good idea, but. I have different positions and perspectives, but if I were to look at this from the perspective of a producer, I'm sorry, but ‘not a Good Idea at all’."

Harada's Perspective on Game Collaborations

Harada, who is not a stranger to collaborations, elaborated on the intricacies of such collaborations, explaining that successful partnerships often hinge on establishing a win-win relationship for both parties involved. He pointed out that this principle is especially crucial in collaborations between products of similar genres, such as 3D fighting games.

"For example, let's say you are a brand. You are a brand, and a competing brand offers to collaborate with you! and there is a competing brand that offers to collaborate with you. In this case, there is a high probability that the competing brand is either as well-known and valuable as you are, or it is a competitor with a lower name recognition and rating than you."

He continued by emphasizing that for a collaboration to be beneficial, it must enhance the value of both brands involved. He noted the imbalance in the proposed collaboration between Tekken and Bloody Roar.

"First of all, in this case, both parties are 3D fighting game, which means “in the case of collaboration between products of similar genres”. So, the power relationship as a general theory that I have explained occurs. In your proposed collaboration, I find that it is quite unbalanced."

Tekken x Bloody Roar Lacks Promotional Value

Harada also touched on the issue of brand recognition, noting that Bloody Roar, being a dormant title, might not resonate with the current generation of gamers.

"For example, in the case of a dormant brand, only the old generation of customers knows the value of that brand. This means that the number of people who would appreciate this collaboration is small."

He concluded by acknowledging his familiarity with Bloody Roar, as Namco Bandai, the parent company of Tekken's publisher, had once been involved in the distribution of Bloody Roar 3. Despite his respect for the series, Harada reiterated that the proposed collaboration lacked the necessary balance and appeal for Tekken's active audience.

Harada's response highlights the multifaceted considerations involved in game collaborations, extending beyond mere fan requests to encompass brand synergy, audience reach, and mutual benefit. While fans may continue to dream of crossover events, it's clear that industry leaders like Harada weigh these decisions with a comprehensive and strategic approach.
