Starfield Is the Best-Selling Game of September Says Market Research Group
Circana: Mortal Kombat 1 Occupies Top Two Spot
Starfield, the spacefaring epic open-world RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, is September 2023’s top-selling game according to market research group Circana.
On X (formerly Twitter), Circana’s video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella said that Starfield topped both physical and digital sales for the month between August 27 to September 30, only followed by the fighting game Mortal Kombat 1. This is despite Starfield’s inclusion in Xbox Game Pass, which is usually cited as a factor in lower sales for other game titles such as Hi-Fi Rush.
Other games that sold well during the month are EA Sports FC 24, Madden NFL 24, and Payday 3 - which occupy the top 3, 4, and 5 spots respectively. NBA 2K24 occupies the top 6 spot, followed by The Crew: Motorfest at the top 7 spot, while Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon occupies the top 8 spot.
Starfield is the Seventh Best-Selling Game of 2023
With this development, Circana stated thatStarfield is the seventh best-selling game of 2023, only overshadowed by Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, which currently sits in the top six spot. The best-selling game of 2023 to date is still Hogwarts Legacy, the Action RPG set in the world of the world-famous Harry Potter franchise.
The game is followed by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (top 2), Madden NFL 24 (top 3), Diablo 4 (top 4), and the remake of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (top 5).
As for any questions regarding why Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 was not included in this list, Piscatella said on Twitter that the developer did not share numbers on its digital sales with Circana. With Baldur’s Gate 3 being a digital-only release, there was no other way for the market research group to track its sales.
Meanwhile, in regards to other data in Circana's report, Piscatella said that the PlayStation 5 remained as the best-selling console of 2023 in terms of both unit and dollar sales. This was also true for September 2023 alone, where the PS5 was trailed by the Xbox Series X|S. Still for September 2023, the best-selling accessory of that month in terms of consumer spending was the PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller - Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition.
