South Park Co-Creator Shares More Details on South Park: Snow Day
South Park: Snow Day Banking on Replayability and Cooperative Gameplay
In an interview with IGN yesterday, South Park Co-Creator Matt Stone elaborated on the studio's decision-making process in the development of South Park: Snow Day. "We came off of The Fractured But Whole (2017 South Park RPG), and we definitely wanted to do another video game, but we wanted to do something different."
Unlike the previous two South Park RPGs, South Park: Snow Day introduces 3D animated aesthetics and co-op battle gameplay. Stone noted South Park: Snow Day's increased replayability and the ability to update characters dynamically to, more or less, tie in with South Park's ever-evolving TV content.
He shared they were afforded greater creative freedom and ease of content creation with the advantages of transitioning to a 3D environment in the game. "The previous games feel like you're in a South Park movie," South Park: Snow Day writer Jameel Saleem said in the interview, "This is more of a visceral feeling of just like being able to run around in South Park and run around in the snow."
Stone also shared insights into the gaming preferences of himself and co-creator Trey Parker, emphasizing their differing tastes and the challenge of finding common ground. Despite their diverse gaming interests, the two found commonality in concepts like replayability and co-op play.
Developing South Park: Snow Day's Gameplay
"Trey and I have totally different tastes in games. I could basically just button mash, I could just play fighting games all the time. I like strategy games a little bit," Stone shared. " So we talked about replayability and playing with friends, and that was also a big reason to do the 3D is like, wow, that would be really cool to be able to be with your friends and do this."
Unlike the narrative-driven progression of previous South Park games, South Park: Snow Day offers a sandbox-style exploration experience, akin to a long episode of South Park, according to Stone. The game is slated for release on March 26, 2024, across multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. South Park: Snowy Day will also release for Nintendo Switch as announced in Nintendo Direct February 2024.
