X (formerly Twitter) sharing options and other integration features will be removed from PlayStation consoles, according to Sony in a recent announcement. Read on to know more.
X Sharing Options and Other Integration Features Removed from PlayStation Consoles
Change Will Take Effect on November 13, 2023
Sony announced on its official PlayStation Support Page integration with X will no longer function on the PS4 and PS5 consoles. Players will no longer be able to view content published on X directly from their PlayStation consoles, post content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X, nor link their X accounts to view content on X.
The termination of this feature is set to take effect from November 13, 2023, and players would now have to bid the option to share their gaming experiences seamlessly on X farewell (R.I.P #PS5Share).
“As of November 13, 2023, integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles,” Sony stated in the announcement. “This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so).”
Game Captures Can Still Be Accessed Through the PS App
Alternatively, PlayStation users can still access game captures through the PS App. This feature is available in countries/regions where the PS App is supported. PS5 users in these regions can access it by downloading the latest PlayStation App update for iOS and Android devices.
Fans Speculate X’s New Pricing Structure as Reason for App Integration Termination
While Sony did not provide specific reasons for this decision, the gaming community speculates that the move is in response to changes in X’s API pricing structure.
X started to offer three levels of Enterprise Packages to its developer platform: the Small Package, which will cost businesses $42,000 per month; the Medium Package ($125,000 per month); and the Large Package ($210,000 per month), which could be significant expenses for integrating X services into gaming consoles.
It's worth noting that X integration was initially included in the early days of the PS4 and served as a fun little tool for gaming communities online to share clips, gameplay, glitches, and other discoveries. Ever since X rolled out the changes in its API pricing structure, giant businesses like Sony and Microsoft have announced their decisions to remove this integration from their gaming platforms.
