Sony Might Grind In Your Stead with AI

Sony's recently published patent shows an auto-play game feature that offers players an option to let AI take over during 'critical' parts of a game.

Sony's Patent Lets AI Take Over The Wheel During 'Grindy' Parts in Game

Totally Optional and Reasserts Your Free Will

The patent, titled "METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR AUTO-PLAYING PORTIONS OF A VIDEO GAME," introduced an optional mode to manage "anticipated grinding content (AGC)" in video games. The auto-play mode option allows the system, in this case an artificial intelligence (AI) player, to play portions of the game in place of the person. It was filed in October 2022 and has recently been published this month.

The patent further detailed that upon completion of the AGC in auto-play mode, a resume notification is presented to the user, offering them the choice to discontinue auto-play and resume gameplay in active play mode; as such, choosing 'No' will bypass the auto-play mode. The auto-play mode can be discontinued and allow the player to switch back to "active play mode."

This auto-play feature automates gameplay through 'critical' sections of a game and simulates the player's gameplay style. According to the patent's description, the auto-play mode uses data from the user play model and enables the AI to replicate and simulate the player's play style, "with the anticipated grinding content (AGC) being identified in part using data from the user play model."

The AI is trained from one or more game sessions by the user using the data from those sessions "to increase a degree to which the user play model can simulate a gameplay style of the user."

Sets of data are pulled from a "data center" that includes, "among other infrastructure, servers, data storage, streaming logic, user account management, and other services to enable gaming. In one embodiment, the cloud gaming system is part of a digital entertainment service, e.g., the PlayStation Network (PSN)."

While Sony has filed numerous patents in recent months, the company has not officially confirmed if patented features, such as the Auto-play mode, are coming to current or future iterations of PlayStation consoles, or otherwise integrated in their games.
