Sakurai’s Tips on Video Game Trailers
Show The Actual Game
In his recent YouTube video titled "Show The Actual Game," Sakurai shared his insights on crafting video game trailers. According to him, when selling a game "it's really important to have a trailer that actually shows the game in action."
Sakurai revealed his personal preference, mentioning that he refrains from purchasing games without trailers. He strongly emphasized that trailers are "an absolutely essential step" in effectively marketing video games.
In addition, he delved into the structure of a video game trailer, expressing his concern about some trailers, such as those on a game's Steam page that lack gameplay footage entirely. Urging developers, he advised, "Please don't do that!"
Sakurai emphasized the importance of immediately showcasing gameplay to grab the attention of target audiences. This is especially crucial when dealing with a new IP or an indie studio, helping potential players understand the essence of the game, said Sakurai.
He straightforwardly advised, "No matter how much effort you put into your trailer, it's never going to match a film. Just quickly showcase what makes your game appealing."
There are Exceptions
While highlighting gameplay is crucial, Sakurai acknowledged exceptions, such as "popular series or games made by famous creators." He also noted that non-gameplay footage can be acceptable if it successfully illustrates the game's systems or “if it's a tech demo that truthfully depicts how the game will run.”
Yet, he emphasized once more that trailers "shouldn't beat around the bush." Sakurai ended his video by underscoring the importance of a swift and direct approach to showcase the game's distinctive and appealing features.
Sakurai is no stranger to the use of CGI trailers as they are a highly anticipated element in his Super Smash Bros. games. The reveal trailers, often featuring original and expertly crafted CGI animations, are among the most eagerly awaited aspects. As Sakurai pointed out, such extravagant elements are more acceptable for popular games.
