Psychological & Supernatural Horror Merged Like "Salad Dressing"

Silent Hill f is set to be Konami’s first return to the mainline series in over a decade, following 2012’s Silent Hill: Downpour. During a panel at Anime Expo 2025, writer Ryukishi07—joined by producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka—described the game’s layered horror as "salad dressing" in terms of its narrative pacing.

Expanding on the metaphor, Ryukishi07 explained that the story is built around a single central theme, with psychological and supernatural elements woven together "like oil and vinegar"—initially indistinguishable, but gradually separating as the story progresses. The writer went on to say, "This story is not just about fear; depending on the angle of view, it can also be a story of sadness and love," giving players extra food for thought.

Producer Motoi Okamoto mentioned in the same event that Silent Hill f began with a desire to create a game infused with "100% of the essence of Japanese horror." He explained that while the original Silent Hill series blended both Western and Japanese horror elements, however, over time the Japanese influences became diluted. According to Famitsu, the strong community demand for the franchise to reconnect with its cultural roots likely influenced the development of the game.

Reflecting this vision, Silent Hill f is set in Ebisugaoka—a 1960s Showa-era town in Japan—marking a departure from the franchise’s usual American settings. The era’s rapid urbanization, social pressures, and post-war anxieties have led fans to connect the setting with towns that experienced similar struggles of isolation and decline. With these themes in mind, it wouldn’t be far off to say that Silent Hill f builds on the series’ psychological foundation while exploring the complex cultural tensions of the era.

Silent Hill f launches on September 25 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Players who purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition will gain early access starting September 23. To stay up to date with the latest information about Silent Hill f, click on our article below!
