RE9 Replicates RE8’s House Beneviento, But On “Another Level"

Resident Evil Requiem takes RE7’s scariest sequence, but takes it up a notch. Read on to learn more about how much horror fans can expect in the game and why the third-person perspective was added.

Resident Evil Horror Ramps Up in RE9

Taking RE8’s Scariest Scene Up "Another Level"

Image

Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) will take Resident Evil Village’s (RE8) scariest scene, but to another level. In an interview with GamesRadar+ during Gamescom 2025, RE9 Director Koshi Nakanishi shared some details regarding the game’s horror aspects and how it differs from other RE titles.

Before RE9, Nakanishi led one of the most horrifying RE games in recent history with RE7. Following that title, RE8 delivered the House Beneviento sequence that scared the living hell out of all players. He said that RE9 will have a similar scene at the start of the game, but it will be even scarier than both titles.

Nakanishi stated, "There are similarities to that section for sure. I think each Resident Evil title has these sort of standalone parts where maybe you don't have the weapons you're used to. We can increase the horror feeling with that."

The developers wanted to highlight Grace Aschroft's inexperience and unfamiliarity with horrific situations by immediately putting her into them at the start of the game. However, they wanted to turn the horror up a notch and present something new to the fans.

Nakanishi explained, "But we want to add something fresh as well, so rather than just copying and pasting over House Beneviento, [there are] things like the mechanism for how you protect yourself from the creature in the demo, and the creature itself and its design, and how it feels to be pursued by it in this section, are something that I think bring another level to that concept of the claustrophobic, unarmed character section of the game."

Compared to previous protagonists in the RE series, such as Leon S. Kennedy and Ethan Winters, who are capable of handling dangerous situations, Grace’s naivete will be another factor that adds to the game’s excitement and horror.

Third-Person Mode Added Because RE9 Might Be Too Scary

Image

When Nakanishi worked on RE7, the team decided to shift to a first-person point of view to highlight further the horror elements of the game. This time, RE9 will offer options for either first-person or third-person perspectives.

According to Nakanishi, he felt that they needed to add the third-person perspective to ease the game’s intensity and horror. He elaborated, "Looking back at Resident Evil 7’s first person perspective, I implemented that as a way to make it more immersive and more scary than ever before, which I think most media and players agreed it was an incredibly scary game, but it was possibly too scary."

Nakanishi worried that people could not handle the game, either to finish it or even start playing. He wanted everyone to enjoy and experience RE9 and said, "So if you started the game off in first person perspective, and you’re finding it’s too much, then third person is almost a way to step slightly back from that level of horror and make it slightly easier to deal with by having the character on screen as a kind of avatar of yourself."

Fans have longed for the return of the classic RE series, and with the latest installment being touted as one of the most horrific titles the franchise has had, the community is excited to try out the new era of horror that Capcom will bring.

Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below!
