Scalpers and Resellers Cited as Reasons for Reprint

Talk about a collector’s item! The Pokemon Company just announced that the well-sought-after “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat” card will be reprinted and available for a limited time in selected stores as part of a promo starting February 10, 2024.

This particular card was initially given for free to museum-goers who visited the Pokemon Exhibit in the Van Gogh Museum last year, though the Museum’s administration decided to cease its distribution after reports of scalping, crowding, and theft began to surface.

The Pokemon Company was forced to apologize for the rampant scalping that occurred before the Van Gogh Museum could handle the situation. Reselling of the promo card became an issue before long, with a few lots on eBay costing up to $600. This price eventually went down when TPC issued a small restock, though the cards remained a collector’s item long after the fact.

It is believed that the latest reprint is meant to reduce the after-market value of the card, which was considered the most valuable Pokemon TCG card in 2023, with prices on eBay going upwards of $200.

According to Pokebeach, the following stores in The Netherlands will be receiving a restock of these promo cards. Each store will be receiving an estimated supply of 100 of these cards to be given away as part of the promo. With over 1,000 total stores among the chains listed below, an estimated 100,000 cards will be injected into the market, which should “reduce the price of the card worldwide.”
