Palworld According to Kids

"It's All the Games I Like"

In a Substack newsletter article by journalist and writer Patrick Klepek, kids and their parents shared their insights on Palworld. The creature-catching shooter game seems to have captured the attention of the little ones for blending elements from various gaming favorites and genres.

One child likened it to a blend of games she liked, including Fortnite, Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, and Pokémon. "I like that it's all the games I like, combined. It's like Fortnite and Minecraft and Sea of Thieves with Pokémon. It has the graphics of Sea of Thieves, and the building and exploring from Minecraft. And from Fortnite it has the guns and glider," the child explained to Klepek.

Another said that the game was like Pokémon, which he enjoyed as he was a fan of the franchise. "I really like Pokémon, and this game is like that," he said while noting that he felt that every mechanic in Palworld "is a lot more interactive." He also shared that he likes how much of Palworld revolves around survival. "I like how a lot of it is a survival game. You don't just get to build OR use your pals, you get to mix them together and it's a good combination of two types of games.”

Palworld has been breaking records left and right, and the game looks to land well on a wide audience that includes kids.

It's Not That Violent, Dad

Another parent shared that his daughter thinks Palworld isn't as violent as her dad believes. The parent noted the controversy surrounding Palworld, particularly its "violence and slave labor aspects," to his daughter. He said that she was confused about that. "She doesn't see it as any more violent than Pokémon, and certainly no more than Fortnite. Forced labor? ‘They're just helping you build,’" the dad told Klepek.

"Why are They Shooting the Cute Animals?"

Klepek himself shared that his daughter was initially captivated by Palworld until the appearance of guns led to a concerned reaction. Klepek said he showed Palworld's trailer to his daughter, and that she went "oooh" and "aaah," and then, "Why are they shooting the cute animals?"

Despite her hesitation to play the game, Klepek noted his daughter's interest in building a hot tub for Pals to relax in.

We're Going 'Pal'back Riding

A lof of the kids' excitement peaked when they discovered the ability to ride Pals using saddles. Most of them mentioned how getting to ride Pals was one of the fun aspects of the game. "I got really excited when I found out you could ride the Pokémon," one kid said to Klepek, affectionately refering to Pals as 'Pokémon'.

Another one shared, "What I like about Palworld is that you get to catch different types of pals and make them work or add them to your party to fight with them. And sometimes you can ride them if you have a saddle."

"I was climbing on these giant angled mountain things, and when I got to the very top I found a large frost egg. I took it to my base, put it in the incubator, and about five minutes later I hatched a Chillit. This was great because it was the first Pal I could ride," said another kid. Chillit went on to become his 'main Pal' ever since.
