The FF16 team contemplates a new Final Fantasy Tactics game in an interview with The Gamer at the recent PAX East 2024 gaming convention.
Yoshi-P Thinks "It’s Probably About Time" for a New Tactics Game
New Tactics Title Based on FF16 is Highly Unlikely
The heads behind FF16's upcoming DLC The Rising Tide delved into what fans can expect next during an interview with The Gamer at the recent PAX East 2024 gaming convention. Among the intriguing facets shared was a musing made by Yoshi-P about the possibility of a new Final Fantasy Tactics game.
Discussing FF16's direction, Yoshi-P said the team wanted to return to the franchise's roots and bring forward classic fantasy elements reminiscent of earlier Final Fantasy titles. "We wanted to take it back to our roots, what we grew up with," Yoshida shared.
The idea of using FF16 as the foundation for a new Tactics title was raised but ultimately deemed challenging. While Yoshi-P, Takeo Kujiraoka, and Michael-Christoper Koji Fox acknowledged the appeal of such, they recognized the complexities involved in adapting FF16's mechanics for a Tactics-style gameplay.
Yoshi-P contemplated, "How would we even do the Eikon versus Eikon battles in that style? If you have the Eikons, how many squares is an Eikon going to be? You have more people out there as well, so what about the wait time in between?" As such the scale of FF16 was agreed upon to not be the best choice for a revival. "What would we even call it?" Fox humored, "Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot."
However, Yoshi-P revealed that much of the staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics are part of the FF16 team, assuring that doses of Tactics can be felt throughout the game. " We love Tactics as well," he told the news site, "It’s probably about time that we do a new one."
