MultiVersus Twitter (X) Account Hints at Upcoming Announcement
MultiVersus’ First Sign of Life in 8 Months
It looks like MultiVersus pulled off a risky recovery. "taps mic testing, testing, 1, 2, 3," read a tweet from the official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account, hinting at a possible announcement sometime soon.
This has been the account’s first sign of life in nearly 8 months, with its last post dating back to June 23, 2023, two days before the game’s open beta concluded. This tease follows a supposed leak on the Australian McDonald’s website, which alluded to an upcoming MultiVersus promotion ahead of the game’s actual release.
MultiVersus’ open beta launched in July 2022 as a Smash Bros.-style crossover fighting game featuring a variety of characters across Warner Bros.’s multitude of properties, including Rick and Morty, DC Comics, Looney Toons, Cartoon Network, Game of Thrones, and The Iron Giant.
After peaking at 150,000 concurrent players a day after its release, the game saw a decline in its player base, finally hitting less than 1,000 players by the end of February 2023. Still, the game was downloaded by nearly 20 million players, suggesting that the game had a strong player base that was just left alone for too long.
Warner Bros. Reiterates Plans to Focus on Free-to-Play and Live-Service Games
In related news, Warner Bros.—proprietor of MultiVersus and its many crossover characters—will be continuing with its plans to shift from console and PC games with slow release schedules to live-service, multiplatform, and free-to-play models, as confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
"We think the opportunity for us, which again, this a multi-year [opportunity], because games is certainly a bit of a long cycle business too," said Zaslav during this week’s Morgan Stanley conference. "[The] opportunity is to take those four franchises and be able to develop a much more holistic approach, particularly around expanding into the mobile and multiplatform free-to-play space, which could give us a much better and consistent set of revenue, and you’ll see us launching later this year some mobile free to play games, which we hope will start building that.
console game," he continued. "How do we develop a game around, for example, Hogwarts Legacy or Harry Potter, that is a live service where people can come today and live and work and build and play in that world on an ongoing basis?"
"And so, we think we’ve got the franchises, we’ve got some of the greatest studio capabilities, and we have a roadmap and a strategic investment plan to try and build out that business," he concluded. "We think there’s meaningful growth over the course of the next couple of years."
Warner Bros.’ continued focus on live-service games hasn’t been met with stellar reactions from the gaming community, with their latest live-service title—February’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League—suffering from major issues on release and lukewarm reception in the weeks that followed.
