Warner Bros. Games Shutting Down MultiVersus

Multiversus Season 5 Will Be Its Last Season

MultiVersus’ official Twitter (X) account announced on January 31, 2025 that the game will be shutting down for good on May 30, 2025 after its fifth and last season. In a blog post on MultiVersus’ official website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. said that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."

MultiVersus Season 5 will begin on February 4, 2025 until May 30, 2025, which will feature two new additional playable characters with DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. According to the blog post, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." After Season 5 finishes, the game will no longer be available to download on PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.

There are no official announcements from MultiVersus regarding its reason for shutting down.

Moving Forward With MultiVersus’ Offline Mode

After the end of Season 5, MultiVersus will have the option to be played offline "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To do this, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus within the duration of Season 5, beginning February 4 at 9 AM PST until May 30 at 9 AM PDT.

After logging in, the game will automatically create a local save file connected to the players’ PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account which will allow them to continue playing Multiversus offline with all the earned and purchased content they have.

MultiVersus also stopped real money transactions on January 31, 2025. This means that Gleamium, the premium currency used for the game, can no longer be purchased in the online store. Players who still have Gleamium in their accounts can still use them to access in-game content until the end of Season 5.

MultiVersus First Opened Public Beta In 2022

MultiVersus opened its public beta in July 2022, introducing fans to a free-to-play fighting game often compared to the popular Super Smash Bros., but trying to distinguish itself with a team-based 2v2 format. From July 2022 to June 2023, MultiVersus’ open public beta featured several updates and 2 Seasons' worth of content in its duration. The game was then relaunched in May 2024, adding new features to the game, such as new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, new currencies, and more.

Despite the changes made during the relaunch, fans were still dissatisfied with the overall performance of the game. These include several technical issues, frequent disconnections, and MultiVersus’ microtransactions. It was reported that in July 2024, MultiVersus saw a 70% decrease in their player count for PS4 and PS5.

MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, featuring 35 playable characters from across different franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. said "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

MultiVersus is available to download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
