In a recent interview with GameSpot, Katsura Hashino, renowned director behind Atlus' Persona series, provided an in-depth look into the studio's upcoming JRPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Metaphor: ReFantazio Dungeons Lets You Play More Freely
More Agency and Variety in Exploring
Metaphor: ReFantazio director Katsura Hashino, in a recent interview with GameSpot, revealed that Metaphor: ReFantazio is significantly larger in scope compared to its predecessors. The game features an expansive game world, filled with a plethora of dungeons, each with unique challenges and experiences. Unlike the linear dungeon designs found in the Persona series, Metaphor's dungeons were designed to allow players more freedom and variety in their exploration.
"Imagine if you go on vacation," Hashino described, likening the game’s exploration to real-life travel choices. "You go to a city and you have 10 places listed on your travel log. Some of these might take two days to enjoy, whereas others might take half a day. Some might require a guide or more preparations, others might be a bit more safe. But you can't do it all."
This gameplay loop means that players will generally not be able to experience all of the game’s content, or visit all the dungeons, in a single playthrough. "In this game, you travel a lot," Hashino continued. "And when you get to your destinations, you have a choice of multiple dungeons you can do. And all these dungeons have different difficulty levels as well, so it's kind of up to you how you choose to spend your time. In this way, there's a lot more freedom."
"The thing that we wanted to make sure was new [for Metaphor: ReFantazio] specifically was that feeling of journey," Hashino additionally stated.
