Bungie Aims to Make PvE More Accessible for Players

Marathon continues to make huge strides to keep its player base satisfied, as Bungie dropped the game’s first balance patch just yesterday for their fresh extraction shooter. One of the updates focuses on nerfing its terrifying AI enemies in the PvE experience.
During Marathon’s launch week, players were intimidated by the presence of the game’s overwhelming AI enemies, notably the UESC robots that populate its maps. Many players, when not taken down by hostile enemy Runners, were easily killed by the mechanical NPCs, often ending their runs prematurely.
The latest Patch 1.0.04 tones down the dreaded PvE issue by reducing the health of most UESC enemies and their shield HP "by a small amount," according to Bungie. The change is meant to lessen the pressure on players when engaging the AI and allow "bullets and meds to go further without reducing too much of the UESC’s bite." This makes PvE more dynamic, as taking them down will not drain too much ammo, leaving players better prepared for future engagements.
Marathon game director Joe Ziegler also shared additional details about this nerf in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying the health reduction is "somewhat minor." He noted that it will help level the playing field, especially for solo players, rewarding those who spot enemies first. Ziegler added, "They still deal the same damage, so don’t let them catch you unaware."

The update also coincides with changes to the item economy introduced in the same patch, where Bungie increased the number of healing items and ammo boxes found on the game’s first map, Perimeter. Both changes help address player concerns about Marathon’s steep PvE difficulty, which many have described as more "challenging" compared to Embark’s ARC Raiders, a game that helped bring the niche extraction shooter genre to a more casual audience.
Bungie Announces First Ever Tau Ceti Cup Tournament

A few hours after Marathon released Patch 1.0.04, Bungie also announced the game’s first-ever online tournament, "The Tau Ceti Cup," named after the planet where the game is set. It is scheduled to go live on March 14, 2026, from 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET to 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET.
The tournament brings popular Twitch streamers together in a single lobby, challenging them to complete the most objectives Bungie has set to be crowned Marathon’s best. Players will earn favor with the game’s factions, such as MIDA and Arachne, by eliminating high-value targets like UESC AI enemies in PvE and taking down the rest of the competition.

The winning squad will take home exclusive prizes, including a custom Marathon jacket created by Australian cosplayer Vamprea, awarded to each team member. Spectators can also earn Twitch drops by watching any of the competitors’ streams. Fans can obtain exclusive rewards based on the total time they spend watching the streamers, which are the following:
⚫︎ Profile Emblem: Angry Bunny (Watch for 1 hour)
⚫︎ Profile Background: Angry Bunny (Watch for 2 hours)
⚫︎ Weapon Sticker: Angry Bunny (Watch for 3 hours)
Players can earn these rewards by linking their Bungie.net account to their Twitch account after watching a Marathon stream from one of the competitors in the Twitch directory with Drops enabled. Once the viewing requirements are met, rewards can be claimed through the player’s Twitch Inventory. Logging into Marathon afterward will then grant the earned items in-game.

Following Marathon’s latest updates, the game will also launch its fourth map, the Cryo Archives, in the second half of March. Set aboard the eponymous interstellar colony ship, Bungie describes it as an "endgame" zone where players will face tougher threats (likely including the series’ alien species) while earning greater rewards, with the potential to obtain higher-rarity gear.
Marathon is out now on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Check out more Marathon content at the link below.
