Riot Games' LoL MMO Undergoes Overhaul and Development Hiatus

"We Will Be 'Going Dark' For a Long Time—Likely Several Years"

The highly anticipated LoL MMO project will undergo a major development 'reset,' with a potential hiatus of several years looming ahead, according to a Twitter (X) thread update by Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill. Merrill revealed that the development team had decided to do a major overhaul of the project some time ago.

According to Merrill, the initial vision for the MMO "just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today." While the MMO remains in development, the reset will keep the project under wraps for several years as the team revisits the planning board.

"To truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre," Merrill stated. "Resetting our development path also means we will be 'going dark' for a long time—likely several years."

As the project goes through this transition, Riot Games has appointed former EA and Biowave producer Fabrice Condominas as executive producer. Condominas expressed confidence in the team's ability to deliver an ambitious MMO experience. Vijay Thakkar remains as the Technical Director of the project.

"Remember, 'no news is good news,' as it means we're hard at work, pouring our hearts and souls into making something that we hope you’ll love," the co-founder offered fans. Despite the setback, Riot Games continues to recruit talent for various aspects of the game's development, including gameplay engineering, game design, user experience design, game art, and game production.
