Japan's "Crap Dungeon:" Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles' Localization Gone Wrong

Image

Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles was accidentally localized by developers Fix-A-Bug as ‘Crap Dungeon’ in their Japanese Steam page. Read on to find out more about the upcoming roguelite and its translation mishap.

Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles Morphs Into the 'Crap Dungeon'

Lost in Translation

Developer Fix-A-Bug accidentally named their upcoming indie roguelite, Crazy-Hyper Dungeon, as ‘Crap Dungeon’ on their Japanese Steam page. On August 13, 2025, amused Japanese users on Twitter posted screenshots of this comedic mistranslation and began circulating them on social media.

"Crappy Dungeon lol Japanese support is nice, but... how did it end up like this?" one user (via Twitter translation) pointed out. "Sh*tty dungeon looks interesting," expressed another user.

According to the developers on Discord, the translation was not intentional. The title got lost in translation and was written as "kuso danjon", literally meaning "Crap Dungeon". The game’s programmer, Giorgio Macratore, similarly responded to a Twitter user explaining that he was currently fixing it and hoped people would give it a try.

The Fix-A-Bug team immediately reached out to their partners to fix the title, likely their publisher, 2P Games, who previously published other indie titles like Tiny Bookshop. The issue was quickly dealt with not long after because as of August 14, the developers have fixed the Japanese Steam page to display the correct title.

"We’re already talking with our partners to fix the title, but honestly… we can’t help laughing about it too," said one of the devs. "Give the game a try – I hope it’s not actually that ‘sh*tty’."

Far From ‘Crappy’

Despite the ‘crappy’ misnomer, Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles has proven itself to be quite the quality title with 2 awards already on its belt before its full release. It won the Jury Prize at Red Bull Indie Forge 2024 in recognition of its "innovative gameplay, engaging design, and unique style". Ironically, it also won the Selected Indie 80 in the Tokyo Game Show 2024 after receiving positive feedback from both players and industry professionals.

"The fact that it was a powerhouse title that won the "Red Bull Indie Forge 2024 Judge's Award" is quietly hitting me," voiced one user (via Twitter translation).

Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles announced itself as an upcoming indie dungeon-crawling roguelite with rhythmic turn-based battles. The game will have 3 distinct playstyles to choose from that significantly alter your experience for each playthrough. The devs advertised it as a game with "eccentric humor" underlying a deeper story guided by the player’s choices.

Demo Now Available

Lining up closely with the localization mishap, Fix-A-Bug announced that the final demo for Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles will be available on Steam starting August 15, 2025. The devs detailed that this new version will have the game in its 99%, with only music and achievement icons missing.

Players eager to try the game were promised various enhancements and fixes in the newest demo. These include adjusted enemy fighting styles and hero skills, a better journal system, tactical pause functionality in combat, a new combat intro, and various bug fixes.

Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles will be released on October 24, 2025, for PC (Steam).
