Horizon Hunters Gathering Announced For Steam and PS5
A Tactical Co-Op Action Title
Horizon Hunters Gathering was just announced through a trailer on the official PlayStation channel and PlayStation.Blog. It is the first tactical co-op action game under the Horizon IP, and is set to launch a a closed playtest for PS5 and Steam through the PlayStation Beta Program sometime soon.
As shown in the 10-minute long trailer-teaser video, gameplay mainly revolves around squads of three players called Hunters, who team up to protect the world ravaged by deadly machines by taking on challenging missions. Each Hunter has a unique style of play, from melee or ranged and using a variety of weapons. There will also be a "rogue-like perk system" to further customize their playstyles to the player's liking. Outside of co-op hunts, there will also be a narrative campaign that will "introduce new mysteries, characters, and threats" to the party, with specific details still kept under wraps.
Horizon's Shift From Single-Player to Multiplayer
Horizon has always been a single-player game, but the studio appears to have bigger, multiplayer ambitions in mind. Guerrilla Studio Director Jan-Bart Van Beek emphasized that while they do love making single-player games and they will keep making them, but they had this "long-standing dream to try to do something different" for Horizon, for players to hunt machines together in-game. "It's something new, but it's still very much Horizon," he assured.
The studio's dream of diving into multiplayer titles was evident since last year when Horizon Steel Frontiers, the IP's first-ever MMORPG, was announced back in November. Despite it being the first for the series, Guerrilla themselves are no stranger to co-op as they have previously worked on the first-person shooter series Killzone, with Van Beek declaring taht "multiplayer games have always been part of our studio's DNA."
Concluding the announcment post, the director hopes that players will feel their sincerity and hard work through playing the game as well. "Bringing a co-op hunting experience into the Horizon universe is something we’ve envisioned for a long time, and we’re approaching it with care, ambition, and passion. I hope the coming months give you a sense of the scale and complexity of what we’ve been building."
