Reviews Rise as Sony Removes Regional Restrictions
Positive reviews for Helldivers 2, the co-op third-person shooter game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony, have risen over the course of 48 hours as the community heralds its "liberation from the Sony blockade,". Over at Reddit, user Good_Policy352 garnered 14,000+ upvotes after urging members to convert negative reviews and welcome new recruits in a post titled "MAJOR ORDER: Change Negative Review After Region Unlock."
The original region lock controversy occured over a year ago as policy changes were imposed on PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts, restricting regional accessibility. Sony made an attempt to strongarm players with a PSN requirement in order to continue playing games they have purchased, only to receive backlash from game communities.
Helldivers 2 players retaliated following the widespread discontent, reaching over 200,000 overwhelmingly negative reviews on Helldivers 2's steam page alone before Sony eventually back-pedled. After months of rallying and protesting, Sony has finally lifted regional bans—albeit in a rather discreet manner. Helldivers 2 wasn't the only game freed from the regional lock. According to updates made on June 13 for Steam's Database, other iconic Playstation titles such as God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 also had their regional restrictions removed, allowing the aforementioned games to increase their player reach on Steam.
There is ongoing debate about whether Stellar Blade's success influenced this decision, particularly given developer Shift Up's reported pushback. However, Sony has not officially confirmed this, and as of now, there is no indication that other games will follow suit besides the initial batch.
