Announced during the PlayStation State of Play September 2024 is Ghost of Yotei, the stand-alone sequel to the Sony-published 2020 action-adventure game, Ghost of Tsushima. Ghost of Yotei releases in 2025, and is expected to be initially available on the PlayStation console.

Likewise developed by Ghost of Tsuhima's Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Yotei transports players into a distant future in Japan, 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. The game is set in Mount Yotei, located in an area called Ezo, now known as the present-day city of Hokkaido, Japan. The in-game lore establishes Ezo as "outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers."

"It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell," Sucker Punch Sr Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb said in a recent PlayStation blog post.

With the new setting, Ghost of Yotei follows a new protagonist, Atsu, a wandering warrior in 1603—feudal era Japan. "When we set out to make a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan," Goldfarb said. He additionally assured fans that Ghost of Yotei, much like its predecessor, will offer the "freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world."

Ghost of Yotei is the studio's first game designed specifically for the PlayStation 5, according to Goldfarb, and the studio is aiming for a massive visual feast for the eyes. The game is "built from the ground up for PlayStation 5," he stated, "and we’re excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima by making the world feel even more real." He additionally teased "massive sightlines" that would let players "look far across the environment," boasting "whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements."
