Frieren Journeys Into Gaming!

Gaming Fan Art Featuring the Powerful and Lovable Elf Takes the Internet By Storm!

The "Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End" anime adaptation has gone viral on the gaming side of Twitter(X) over the past few weeks due to artists creating fan art depicting the elf protagonist, Frieren, in various video game cover art. The viral trend originated on December 18th last year when Twitter (X) artist @ononotsu shared a piece of fan art featuring Frieren on the cover of Dark Souls, titled "Frieren Souls." The post since then has garnered nearly 600k views, 34k likes, and 6.3k shares.

Unexpectedly, the trend of placing Frieren on various video game cover arts only recently gained traction, following the season finale of the anime that aired on March 22, 2024. The trend has since gone viral, with numerous posts garnering thousands of likes, particularly those shared by artist @ononatsu, who continued to showcase more of their artwork online.

Surprisingly, Monster Strike, a Japanese mobile game, has just announced a collaboration event with the series! Frieren has officially dipped her toes into the gaming universe! However, this is just a special side event for a mobile game featuring the character.

Now, that begs the question, if the Frieren anime were to actually be adapted into a full-fledged game, what kind of genre would be perfect for it? And, if we took the elf herself and plopped her into any gaming franchise, which would she slot in effortlessly? Keep reading and find out below!

Frieren x Baldur’s Gate 3, Or Any DnD-like RPG Really

Image

This is perhaps the most straightforward Frieren game adaptation there could be, as the anime itself has various different classes and fantasy creatures in its characters. A Frieren RPG campaign could involve the main group of heroes depicting their ‘brief’ ten-year adventure of defeating the Demon King before the start of the story! Better yet, it could span all of Frieren’s adventures as she travels the world before she meets with her aged companions once more.

Frieren x Zelda

Image

The Legend of Zelda is a tale as old as time, where the Princess Zelda and the hero of Hyrule are both reincarnated age after age to combat the eternal evil of Ganondorf… So what if instead of reincarnation, the near-immortal elf becomes The Legend of Frieren through her repeated efforts of combating an recurring evil that keeps coming back throughout several centuries? Her story could span through several different titles depicting her growth between each as she meets new characters that continue to challenge and teach her about humanity–an aspect which she struggles with in the story.

Frieren x Chrono Trigger

Image

Taking the time aspect further alongside the RPG potential of the world, Frieren has lived through numerous ‘normal-length’ lifespans with her over 1000 years of age. In a Chrono Trigger-like game with a time-travel mechanic, a party separate from Frieren could look to her for wisdom or help in several different epochs in order to fulfill their overarching quest. The party might need the help of a younger Frieren from the past, or perhaps seek the wisdom of a more experienced version far into the future. Similar to Lavos, Frieren would be the center converging point throughout all epochs, and it’ll be up to your party to complete your quest regarding her.

Frieren x PERSONA, or Any Social Simulation RPG

Image

Focusing more into the social aspect this time, a PERSONA-like game starring Frieren, the passage of time in-game could be accelerated to feel relative to how she ages. Being an elf, an entire decade’s worth of adventure felt very brief for her. A social-simulation game from her point of view as she tries to understand humans better and socialize, while battling the aspect of time wherein they seem to age so fast could be a novel idea.

Of course, PERSONA isn’t all about the social links, as it’s also known for their stylish fights and turn-based RPG, of which Frieren would feel natural in with her amazing magic combat prowess.

Speaking of how strong she is…

Frieren x Elden Ring/Souls-like

Image

Okay, now we’re in dream scenario territory. Imagine a souls-like game where you play as Frieren. There’s so much potential in the idea, as the elf-mage herself is a powerful magic user having gained so much knowledge and use of her mana throughout her ‘old age.’ She would be a very versatile caster class with the ability to conjure all sorts of magical attacks against all sorts of monsters in their world, it’s very much a perfect fit!

Please Miyazaki-san, could we ask for a Frieren DLC after Shadow of the Erdtree?

Frieren x Guilty Gear -Strive-, or Granblue Fantasy: Versus, or Any Fighting Game

Image

This would not only be really interesting and a monumental collaboration, but Frieren being a guest character in a fighting game with breathtaking aesthetics(preferably in an anime style developed by Arc System Works) is an impossibly amazing scenario. Seeing as Frieren is pretty much an amazing fighter in her own right, she would fit in perfectly against the other anime fighting game characters in Guilty Gear of Granblue Fantasy: Versus. Fighting games always have their magical casters, and Frieren would absolutely hold her own against Sol Badguy or 2B.

I won’t lie though, I just want an Arc System Works model of Frieren, because they would do her so much justice as a 3D character. And also for her to beat up Happy Chaos and teach him a thing or two about magic.
