Game So Big, It Makes Console Storage Spaces Look Small

Modern AAA's Typically Require Lots of Storage Space

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was reported to require 145.250GB of storage space, as revealed by news outlet PlayStation Game Size. This sizable demand raised concerns among players, considering the PS5 usually comes with a custom-built SSD that offers merely 667GB of free storage. Easily, the game could take up approximately 22% of storage space.

While a newer model of the PS5 offering 1TB storage was introduced in 2023, console players are still progressively faced with challenges regarding storage capacity due to the escalating file sizes of modern AAA games.

In response to the reported file size of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, a player on Twitter (X) shared how this is "One of the reasons I bought a 4TB SSD over Black Friday 😅".

Today's AAA games' file sizes are getting huge, yet it seems modern consoles' storage capacity isn't able to catch up. Notably, Sony has been actively promoting the expansion options for PS5's M.2 SSD Storage and external USB drive compatibility features.

Another player described how this situation is "starting to get crazy now," pointing out how modern big-name names could potentially require file size storage beyond 150GB. "This is starting to get crazy now. At this point, we need 2tb of storage on the PS5. At some point in the future, big games like this are gonna average 200gb," read their tweet.

Taking things into account, the future of console gaming might point towards the cloud, seeing as Sony Group CEO Kenichiro Yoshida went on record in an interview to say that PlayStation plans to expand to cloud gaming on top of PC and mobile.

Meanwhile, Xbox has been vigorous with the expansion of its own cloud gaming service, Xbox Game Pass, over the past years and has seen huge success with the offering. The cloud gaming service had secured many a great deal of partnerships for Xbox. Xbox CFO Tim Stuart even hinted at the potential extension of Game Pass to rival consoles.

Today's landscape of gaming could be offering a glimpse of a shift towards a business model that could see more and more games rely on consoles' cloud gaming functionality for various purposes aside from accommodating the increasing demands of game sizes.
