Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Sequel May Have Nobuo Uematsu As A Composer Despite His Half-Retirement

Image

Renowned Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu, although stepping away from full game compositions, may make a triumphant return to work on the score for the upcoming FF7 Remake Trilogy. Read on to learn about his comments and past works.

Nobuo Uematsu Might Get Involved in Composing FF7R Trilogy Finale

Nothing Official Confirmed Yet

Nobuo Uematsu expressed his willingness to contribute to the project's finale during a Special Talk Session with FF7 Remake director Tetsuya Nomura on the Square Enix Music Channel. Having composed the soundtracks for the first several Final Fantasy games, Uematsu's musical contributions to the franchise have become legendary. During the discussion, Nomura lightheartedly nudged Uematsu to commit to composing the theme for the final game in the FF7 Remake Trilogy, citing his integral role in the FF series.

"Not that we’ve made it official yet, but I’d like to believe you’re a lock for the next title? You’ll do it, right?" the director mused. "Again, this isn’t an official statement or offer. Just a gentleman’s agreement, maybe? You will come back for the third game, right?" Uematsu, in good spirits, expressed his willingness to return for the project, telling his peers that it would be "an honor to do so."

Though he largely stepped away from full-game compositions, Uematsu created the main themes for two of the games in the remake project: 'Hollow' for FF7 Remake and 'No Promises to Keep' for FF7 Rebirth. "Of course, I'm honored you called me back to work on some songs for Remake and Rebirth," Uematsu told Nomura, "I'm happy I got to help out, even just a little."

Insights from Nobuou Uematsu on Composing Final Fantasy Music

Reflecting on his past experiences with composing Final Fantasy soundtracks, Uematsu shared insights into the challenges he faced. He discussed technical setbacks faced back in the day, such as playback via streaming taking a long time to load which eventually involved lots of compression then splicing the file on a chipset, that led to more arduous labor in that regard.

As for the iconic One-Winged Angel theme, the track synonymous with the legendary villain Sephiroth, Uematsu revealed that the reason he went with Latin for Sephiroth’s music is because he believed that by using Latin, though a dead language comprehensible to only a few, the music would remain equally impactful for all listeners worldwide.

"I figured only a handful of people around the world could understand it." He further explained that if no one understood the language then "it’s fair for everyone," as it, likewise, didn’t sit right with him to have to choose between English or Japanese to appeal to a wider audience.

In a separate interview with German publication Zeit Online earlier this year, Uematsu expressed doubts about composing an entire game's soundtrack again. While he remains involved in creating main themes for Final Fantasy titles, he revealed that he has shifted away from composing entire soundtracks.
