Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Developer’s Next Game
Next Title Will Not Follow the Same Formula

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive will not follow the same formula for its next game, despite the tried and tested formula of its first game achieving overwhelming success. Speaking with The Washington Post on October 8, 2025, Expedition 33 Creative Director Guillaume Broche shared more details about their plans for the upcoming title.
While the game is set to have a massive update following reaching over 5 million copies sold in 5 months, there have been rumblings on the studio’s next project. In May 2025, Sandfall Interactive COO and Producer François Meurisse confirmed that "there will be another video game, for sure," but it was still too early to determine what it could be.

Broche echoed the same sentiment and stated their mindset on how their next project could go down. Despite drawing inspiration from several mechanics of popular video games, such as Devil May Cry’s parrying and the Mario & Luigi RPG titles' ability to keep players active during enemy turns, he emphasized that it remains uncertain how they will approach their next game.
The Creative Director explained, "We don’t want to be constrained by story, art style or gameplay in whatever we want to make next, so nothing to say. We just want it to feel authentic, and made with love."
Still Some Undiscovered Secrets In Expedition 33

Expedition 33 has been out for over 5 months, but there are still hidden secrets fans have yet to uncover. In an interview with Eurogamer on October 10, Broche stated that they riddled the game with Easter Eggs and references from different titles, including Final Fantasy 8’s Triple Triad card game.
However, there are still some that have yet to be discovered, as Broche said, "There are, but I don't want to say them because they won't be secrets anymore. Maybe they have been found, but I haven't seen anything about it. There are still a few things, yeah."
Early Prototype of Expedition 33

What fans did discover is a trailer from an early version of the game. As posted by Broche on Reddit in 2020, he shared a draft trailer of their project as a bid to recruit voice actors.
According to Broche, the community discovering previous iterations of Expedition 33 felt like "everybody entered my room and saw my underwear," as he completely forgot that it still exists online. He stated, "It's funny because I think that not often enough do we see real behind-the-scenes footage of games in general, like the very first prototypes that very often look terrible."

Meanwhile, Sandfall CTO and Lead Programmer Tom Guillermin said that it’s not that bad for people to find out the game’s prototype. He elaborated, "It's actually the same project in Unreal that we just upgraded iteratively and in the end that's the game people get to play. I think demystifying that great games are not great from the beginning, it's maybe good for the industry and also for the hobbyist as well."
The initial project, titled "We Lost," was set in a steampunk town with fantasy boss battles, which eventually evolved into the Belle Époque-inspired world of Expedition 33. This could indicate that whatever Sandfall Interactive is cooking right now behind the scenes could be entirely different when it comes to light.

Regardless, fans still can’t get enough of Expedition 33 and can’t wait to experience a new playable environment filled with new enemies and challenging boss fights on its upcoming update. Coupled with various bug fixes and UI improvements, it seems that the game would top the charts once more when the patch comes.
