97 Employees Across Development, Administration, and Support Services are Let Go
Embracer Group was reported to be canceling an upcoming installment in the Deus Ex series after two years of development and will lay off a number of employees as part of its ongoing cost-cutting initiatives, according to a scoop by Bloomberg on Monday.
Embracer Group's Montreal-based game studio Eidos-Montreal announced on Twitter (X) that it will lay off 97 employees, in light of reports of the cancellation of the upcoming Deus Ex game. In its statement on the social media platform, Eidos-Montreal said that it has let go of employees across its development teams, administration, and support services due to "the global economic context, the challenges of our industry and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer."
The Deus Ex franchise was acquired by Embracer in 2022 and Bloomberg’s source claimed that the game was supposed to enter production in the later half of 2024.
Embracer Group Continues Gaming Industry Layoff Trend
Earlier this month, Borderlands developer Gearbox was the latest to be affected by the continuing wave of layoffs at the Embracer Group. Free Radical Design, makers of the game Timesplitter, faced closure in December 2023 after it suffered a round of layoffs the month prior. Likewise, it was reported in November last year that Embracer laid off roughly 5% of its work force and canceled 15 upcoming games as part of its wider internal restructuring plans.
