Elden Ring’s ‘Seamless Co-Op’ Mod Has Caught the Eyes of FromSoftware
Director Miyazaki Acknowledges it as a Net Positive and Doesn’t Oppose it
Elden Ring Director and FromSoftware head honcho Hidetaka Miyazaki is aware of the Elden Ring ‘Seamless Co-Op’ mod, and says that they may have some things to learn from it for their future projects. In a recent interview with gaming outlet PC Gamer, Miyazaki was asked about the multiplayer mod and his thoughts about how it enables players to tackle the game completely alongside one another, in contrast to the game’s limited co-cop design philosophy of only allowing players to help in brief instances such as boss fights and limited areas.
Miyazaki reveals he knows the existence of the mod, and acknowledges its benefits and different playstyle when compared to how they designed Elden Ring, where they focused on the solo-player journey with the more casual visitor drop-in mechanic that allows players to immediately move on once their job has been completed.
"It’s definitely not something we actively oppose or want to downplay, wanting to go through the whole game together. In terms of where we were with Elden Ring, it was simply a case of wanting that more loose, casual style– drop in, defeat a boss, drop out. It doesn’t put any technical restrictions on the player, it just sort of lets them complete this focus and then move on, so to speak."
Although it seemed like Miyazaki, although allows the mods, is doubling down on FromSoftware’s core game design philosophy, he then shares that they’re[FromSoftware] not necessarily dismissing the idea, and that it may be a feature that they will consider for other future games–not necessarily the Elden Ring or soulslike franchise.
"That’s not to say we won’t consider other ways like you and your friend played, from beginning to end, total co-op– that’s not to say we won’t consider ideas like that with our future games."
That would certainly be an interesting feature for a FromSoftware game to have in the future, as they have been primarily developing single-player-heavy games from their inception. A future co-op soulslike officially made by the minds behind the Dark Souls series and Elden Ring will surely turn heads and see success, provided gamers have friends to play with, or adequate online capabilities can be provided for lone players to meet and work together.
Only time will tell if Miyazaki will act upon this co-op idea for a future game, but for now, every gamer should have their eyes on the next massive Elden Ring experience, the Shadows of the Erdtree DLC.
