Jackpot! Devil May Cry Anime Arrives to Netflix in April 2025

Devil May Cry Anime In Collaboration with Capcom, Adi Shankar, and Studio Mir

Netflix is gearing up to unleash another animated series based on a popular video game franchise. This time, the streaming giant is adapting Capcom’s hack-and-slash series Devil May Cry. Produced by Adi Shankar and animated by the renowned Studio Mir (known for The Legend of Korra and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf), the adaptation is set to hit Netflix in April of next year.

"Rest assured, we are working very hard because we love the franchise and because we want to deliver something great," Shankar said on Tudum, Netflix's companion site. "Our goal wasn’t just to pump out another animated show. My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform—period."

The Devil May Cry animated series has been a long time coming. Fans have been eager for this new adaptation ever since Shankar mentioned in a 2018 interview with IGN that the hack-and-slash series will join Castlevania in what he dubbed as "the bootleg multiverse." The series may have taken a long time before arriving to the small screen, but Shankar mentioned then that he "acquired these (Devil May Cry) rights myself so the jabronis in Hollywood don’t f*** this one up too."

One of the key reasons fans are cautiously optimistic is Shankar’s proven track record with Castlevania. The show turned out to be a critical success, so much so that it was greenlit for three more seasons and spawned a spin-off in Castlevania: Nocturne. Shankar is even in talks with Ubisoft and Netflix to produce an animated Assassin’s Creed series.

Eagerness for the show soared when an announcement trailer was dropped during Netflx’s Geeked Week last year. Not much was shown back then—just Dante stylishly showing off his moves with a gun. However, this excitement reached a fever pitch when nearly a year later, fans finally heard Dante utter his iconic line: "Jackpot!"

Everything We know About Netflix’s Devil May Cry

According to Tudum, Devil May Cry series will follow "Dante, an orphaned hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck." He makes it his "life’s mission to avenge his mother’s death by killing all demons."

While this doesn’t really say much about the series’ plot, Shankar did confirm in a 2021 interview with IGN that Dante’s enigmatic twin brother Vergil and the devil hunter lady will appear in the show. Additionally, he confirmed that the first season will consist of "eight episodes" and will be part of a larger, interconnected narrative spanning multiple seasons.

Based on the trailer alone, it seems that the animated series will delve into Dante’s younger years, possibly exploring the events of Devil May Cry 3, widely considered as one of the best entries in the franchise. The teaser hints at this with a nod to the White Rabbit, a character from DMC3’s prequel manga, Dante’s Awakening.

One detail that caught people’s attention, though, was its voice cast. Dante’s long-time voice actor, Reuben Langdon, known for defining the character’s swagger and attitude in the games, won’t be returning. Instead, it sounds like Johnny Yong Bosch, the voice of Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and 5, will be taking over the role. While Langdon’s voice may have changed over the years, fans speculate that this change in voice actors is likely due to the controversies surrounding him at the moment.

With Netflix’s Devil May Cry set to premiere in April 2025, there’s plenty of time for Netflix and Shankar to fine-tune the adaptation. The teaser has already stoked fans, but it’s clear that this project has a lot to live up to, especially given the high bar set by Castlevania. Whether the Devil May Cry anime can capture the chaotic energy that the games are known for remains to be seen. One thing is certain, though—this is a project with a lot of heart and investment from Shankar himself. He has even been working closely with Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a key figure in the DMC games and the 2007 Devil May Cry: The Animated Series.

"The entire team both from the management side and the creative side have been so incredibly supportive and gracious," he told IGN. "Kobayashi-san has been wonderful. It’s seriously a joy to work with Capcom. Their character library is unlike anything assembled."
