Destiny 2 News

2025

December 1

⚫︎ Bungie has acknowledged that Destiny is failing to attract new players, despite a highly engaged veteran base. Game director Tyson Green told IGN that the audience has “hardened,” with fewer newcomers joining even after the Light and Darkness saga concluded with The Final Shape and the Fate saga began with The Edge of Fate in July. Bungie says it is now doubling down on player feedback, chase systems, new gear tiers, and challenge customization to re-ignite appeal.

November 25

⚫︎ Bungie has released the Destiny 2: Renegades launch trailer and a new “Making of a Renegade” documentary ahead of its December 2, 2025 release. The Destiny 2 expansion, inspired by Star Wars, was developed with Lucasfilm Games.

October 7

⚫︎ Bungie has announced revisions to several progression systems originally planned for Destiny 2: Renegades, following community feedback on the expansion’s early details. The adjustments come as part of the studio’s ongoing efforts to refine the game’s structure after a turbulent period marked by mixed reception to The Edge of Fate and other recent updates.

One of the most notable reversals concerns seasonal power levels. Bungie confirmed that player power will now carry over into Renegades, rather than resetting to 200 as previously outlined.

September 17

⚫︎ Bungie responded to community outrage over its decision to make a free armor set into the Eververse Store, requiring players to pay for it with real money. In Bungie's latest tweet, the team rescinded the decision, allowing players to earn the said gear for free. Additionally, more adjustments to this season's earned rewards will arrive in future updates.

September 11

⚫︎ Bungie has dated Destiny 2: Renegades for December 2, a Star Wars–themed expansion featuring a new hub, crew-building, and story missions with the Drifter. However, reactions have been mixed, as players remain dissatisfied with The Edge of Fate and ongoing grind issues. Many feel the crossover sits awkwardly between a cosmetic tie-in and a full campaign.

September 10

⚫︎ Bungie has announced Destiny 2: Renegades will launch on December 2, introducing a Star Wars-inspired storyline, the new Lawless Frontier mode, Blaster weapon archetype, and the Tharsis Outpost hub. The Year of Prophecy Ultimate Edition bundles both current and upcoming content with exclusive rewards.

Meanwhile, the free Ash & Iron update is live today, bringing players back to the Plaguelands with the new Reclaim activity, refreshed rewards, and upcoming events including the Desert Perpetual Epic raid (Sept. 27), a new Exotic mission (Oct. 7), Festival of the Lost (Oct. 21), and Call to Arms (Nov. 11–Dec. 1).

September 8

⚫︎ Ahead of tomorrow’s Edge of Fate reveal stream, Bungie has dropped a trailer for Destiny 2’s Ash and Iron update. The update reintroduces the Plaguelands from Rise of Iron with a new activity, alongside Dungeon Lairs for Pinnacle Ops, a new Exotic mission called “Warsat Heist,” and the return of Call to Arms with new weapons, including a lever-action shotgun. A new variant of the Rise of Iron axe also makes its debut. Ash and Iron goes live tomorrow.

September 4

⚫︎ Bungie will officially unveil Destiny 2: Renegades on September 9 at 9 AM PST, giving players their first in-depth look at the Star Wars-themed expansion. The collaboration will feature familiar elements like the Empire, Blasters, Lightsabers, and the criminal underworld, along with a new Dungeon launching December 2 when the expansion goes live. While no raid is planned, a World’s First Contest Mode race will accompany the Dungeon’s release.

In the meantime, Bungie will roll out the Ash and Iron update on the same day as the reveal. The update introduces new gear, Artifact mods, sandbox changes, seasonal events, and a new Epic difficulty for Desert Perpetual.

August 27

⚫︎ Bungie has rolled out a new Destiny 2 update focused on bug fixes and stability improvements, while also introducing a positive adjustment to the Portal. The smaller patch comes ahead of the larger Ash & Iron update, which is set to deliver significant sandbox and gameplay changes.

Among those future adjustments is a nerf to rewards in the Portal’s Solo Ops activity, a decision that has already sparked community backlash. For now, however, this week’s update is centered on maintenance and minor improvements.

August 24

⚫︎ Bungie’s latest blog outlined big changes to the new Portal hub in Destiny 2, including buffs to Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops. But the announcement that Solo Ops will award less power has sparked backlash, with many players calling the adjustment tone-deaf and unnecessary.

August 18

⚫︎ Bungie has teased significant buffs arriving in Destiny 2 with September’s Ash & Iron mid-season update, particularly aimed at Warlock players. While The Edge of Fate expansion launched to mixed reception due to bugs, divisive content, and underwhelming player numbers on Steam, Bungie has continued addressing issues and rolling out improvements.

July 29

⚫︎ Bungie has temporarily disabled the newly released Blackletter armor ornament set for Warlocks in Destiny 2 after players discovered it rendered characters completely invisible in-game. The $15 cosmetic set, released via the Eververse Store, was intended to give players a stained-glass, moss-covered appearance.

However, a rendering issue made players wearing it entirely invisible to others, creating a significant advantage in PvP modes. The issue was quickly flagged by the community and confirmed by Bungie on social media, with the developer stating it is investigating the problem.

July 28

⚫︎ Completion rates for Destiny 2’s latest expansion, Edge of Fate, are down nearly 70% compared to last year’s The Final Shape, according to newly released data. Launched on July 15, 2025, Edge of Fate marks the beginning of Bungie’s new Fate Saga and introduces sweeping changes, including a revamped armor system, new gear tiering, and the Portal feature.

Despite its significance as a fresh start following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga, player engagement appears notably lower in comparison to its predecessor.

July 21

⚫︎ Bungie has confirmed it will address issues with Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate’s new Matterspark ability after players reported experiencing motion sickness and visual glitches, particularly on ultrawide monitors. The Metroid-style movement mechanic, introduced in the latest expansion, has prompted widespread complaints across the community.

⚫︎ Bungie has addressed community concerns over alleged stealth nerfs introduced in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, following reports that numerous gameplay adjustments were missing from the expansion’s extensive patch notes. Players compiled lists of undocumented changes—particularly affecting Warlock subclasses—on platforms like Reddit, prompting widespread backlash.

Among the most discussed changes are apparent nerfs to the Warlock's Touch of Flame and Incinerator Snap builds. In response, Bungie’s communications manager Dylan Gafner acknowledged the omissions, stating the team is actively reviewing the issues and will publish a full list of missed updates soon. “Many apologies here,” Gafner wrote. “We're looking to get details out ASAP.”

July 18

⚫︎ Bungie has announced a series of fixes for Destiny 2 following the launch of The Edge of Fate expansion, with several updates scheduled to begin rolling out on July 18. The changes aim to address player-reported issues, including campaign progression blockers.

According to a July 17 update from the official Destiny 2 Team Twitter account, the development team has identified the causes of multiple post-launch problems and is actively working on solutions.

July 16

⚫︎ Some observant Destiny 2 players have noticed that certain characters had different voices, or was completely silent altogether. Bungie has mentioned the change before back in May, but most players have only begun to see the change with the game's release. The odd changes were due to some voice actors, specifically for Ikora, Orin, and Chioma, being "unavailable" during the time of recording. However, they will now be re-recording these previously silent or awkward lines with the original VAs.

July 15

⚫︎ Destiny 2 pays homage to its origins in 2008 with the return of the old menu music, which will greet players with that distinct twinkling sound. While the game itself features new gameplay and direction, the opening screen stays the same. Fans have taken to social media to appreciate Bungie's blast to the past.

July 14

⚫︎ Destiny 2 Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens has confirmed that Bungie is actively working to make the game more approachable for new players. In a recent update, Stevens acknowledged the difficulty of balancing accessibility for newcomers while keeping long-time fans engaged, and admitted the studio has learned from past missteps.

July 9

⚫︎ Bungie has made all existing Destiny 2 expansions free to play for a limited time, giving players full access ahead of the upcoming Edge of Fate DLC launching later this month. While only a portion of the game's decade-long saga remains playable in 2025, this move allows new and returning players to experience the full breadth of available content.

July 7

⚫︎ Destiny: Rising, the free-to-play mobile spin-off of Bungie's sci-fi shooter franchise, is set to launch on Android and iOS on August 28. Developed in collaboration with Chinese publisher NetEase, the game takes place in an alternate timeline of the Destiny universe, exploring a post-Dark Age narrative.

First announced in October 2024, Destiny: Rising features a shared-world structure and follows a fully customizable Lightbearer named Wolf. Players will journey through diverse locations, including the sanctuary of Haven, the icy metro of Jiangshi, and the Red Sea Rift. The game has undergone closed alpha testing since November and is now preparing for its global debut.

⚫︎ Bungie has announced major vendor and inventory changes coming with the Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2. Core Tower vendors—Ada-1, Banshee-44, and Master Rahool—will receive focused role updates and refreshed inventories aimed at streamlining player interaction.

July 2

⚫︎ Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate's raid will go live on July 19, following a brief tease in the expansion’s launch trailer. The raid will kick off with a World First race under Contest Mode, leveling the playing field for all teams during the first 24 hours.

June 26

⚫︎ In a recent livestream, Bungie showcased Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate’s new Dark Matter abilities, which will play a key role in both combat and exploration on the upcoming Kepler destination. Designed with traversal in mind, these abilities also offer unique combat applications.

June 22

⚫︎ Bungie has announced a significant combat update coming with Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, introducing a new Melee stat as part of the Armor 3.0 system. When this stat exceeds 100, it boosts melee ability damage, offering up to a 30% bonus at 200. This bonus stacks multiplicatively with other damage modifiers but will no longer interact with Scorch and Ignition effects, aligning it more closely with how Jolt functions.

The update also redefines how Glaives operate. With the expansion, Glaives will count as unpowered melee abilities, meaning they will now benefit from melee damage buffs, including the new Melee stat. Glaives can also trigger melee-related effects, though to balance this added power, their base damage against PvE enemies has been reduced. Despite the nerf, Bungie notes Glaives now have significantly higher potential DPS than before.

June 5

⚫︎ Bungie has released a new update for Destiny 2 as part of the June 2 Weekly Reset, addressing several bugs and gameplay issues. The update fixes a notable bug in the Rite of the Nine activity that allowed players to accidentally select the Gjallarhorn Exotic Catalyst reward even if they already owned it. This patch now prevents duplicate selections.

In addition, the dungeon rotation has shifted to the revamped Prophecy dungeon, the final in the current cycle. Players can now explore updated content within the Rite of the Nine social space and earn new gear, with increased loot buffs expected to roll out later in June and into July.

May 6

⚫︎ Bungie has unveiled the upcoming year's content roadmap for Destiny 2, beginning with the long-awaited Edge of Fate expansion, set to launch on July 15. The expansion was fully detailed during a recent reveal, with Bungie also confirming additional content and plans for the game's future.

⚫︎ Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 will receive two paid expansions this year, one of which will be themed around Star Wars. The reveal comes as part of a broader update on the game's future, which includes a new multi-year story arc beginning in July. This marks a shift from the franchise’s traditional annual expansion model, first hinted at last September, with Bungie instead opting for two medium-sized expansions per year.

May 5

⚫︎ Bungie’s attempt to dismiss a copyright lawsuit has been denied after the studio was unable to present key in-game content that has since been removed and placed in the Destiny Content Vault. The lawsuit, filed by writer Matthew Kelsey Martineau, alleges that Destiny 2’s Red Legion bears significant similarities to a faction described in his WordPress-published writings, which predate the game's release.

Bungie argued that the elements cited in the lawsuit differ meaningfully from those in Destiny 2, but the judge found the company could not sufficiently demonstrate that without access to the vaulted content. The case highlights the legal complications posed by live-service games where story content may no longer be accessible post-update.

⚫︎ Bungie has announced that it will unveil new details about Destiny 2's next major expansion, The Edge of Fate, during a special reveal event on May 6. The event is expected to provide a comprehensive look at what players can anticipate in Year 8 of the game, following the conclusion of The Final Shape.

April 4

⚫︎ A judge has denied Bungie’s attempt to dismiss a copyright lawsuit by referencing now-inaccessible content from Destiny 2, ruling out the studio’s proposal to rely on lengthy YouTube lore explainers as evidence. The case stems from an October 2024 claim by sci-fi author Matthew Kelsey Martineau, who alleged that Bungie lifted key ideas from a story he published under the pseudonym Caspar Cole. Both Martineau's work and Destiny 2’s original Red War campaign feature similar elements—including a faction called the “Red Legion,” flamethrowers, and war hounds.

Bungie’s defense is complicated by the fact that the campaign in question was removed from the game and placed into the Destiny Content Vault, making it unplayable. The judge declined to review the proposed 10-hour lore videos, highlighting the challenge of preserving evidence in evolving live-service games where large portions of content can be made inaccessible over time.

April 18

⚫︎ In the April 17 edition of This Week in Destiny, Bungie confirmed the title of its next major content drop: The Edge of Fate. A full reveal is scheduled for May 6, 2025, where the studio will unveil details about the upcoming year of Destiny 2.

March 11

⚫︎ In an unexpected turn, Destiny 2 players discovered that the upcoming Rite of the Nine dungeon mode—originally scheduled for Act 3—was prematurely released following the launch of Act 2. The new mode, which is intended to reintroduce weapons and offer a unique teaching-style experience, went live in an unintentional and clearly unfinished state.

Players quickly noticed missing features, including the lack of a launch pop-up, duplicated Xur Treasure Horde icons (with one non-functional), and the appearance of untextured, incomplete weapons. Bungie has not yet issued an official statement on the accidental early release.

February 24

⚫︎ Following the release of the Heresy update earlier this month, Destiny 2 players discovered a bug allowing all three Exotic Glaives—Edge of Intent, Edge of Concurrence, and Edge of Action—to be used by any class, breaking their previous Warlock, Hunter, and Titan exclusivity. The bug also affected some older class-locked swords. After reviewing the situation, Bungie has announced that it will not fix the issue. Though unintentional, the developer has decided to retain the change, effectively making the expanded weapon access a permanent part of the game.

October 15

⚫︎ Amid ongoing speculation and leaks, NetEase Games has officially announced Destiny: Rising, a free-to-play mobile RPG shooter set in an alternate timeline of the Destiny universe. The game takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth attempting to recover after “The Collapse,” offering a new narrative while maintaining familiar elements for longtime fans.

In a press release dated October 14, 2024, NetEase Senior Vice President Ethan Wang stated the company is “honored to partner with Bungie” and aims to deliver a “Destiny-caliber experience” tailored for mobile platforms.

September 16

⚫︎ Destiny 2 developer Bungie has pledged to credit and compensate artist Tofu Rabbit after allegations surfaced that the studio had used her artwork without permission. The illustration appeared on the NERF LMTD Destiny 2 Ace of Spades Blaster, a licensed product developed with Hasbro.

Following public criticism from the artist on Twitter (X), Bungie confirmed it had investigated the matter with its partner and is now in contact with Tofu Rabbit to ensure proper recognition and payment for the work.

August 16

⚫︎ A recent update to Destiny 2 has triggered a widespread issue where player account names, known as Bungie Names, were unexpectedly altered. Beginning around August 14, many users reported their names being replaced with “Guardian” followed by random numbers. According to Bungie, the issue stems from its name moderation tool, which mistakenly flagged and changed a large number of account names.
