Sam Returns to Action as Part of the Drawbridge
Lots of intrigue surrounds Death Stranding 2: On The Beach as we’re introduced to a new civilian group Fragile founded – Drawbridge. Drawbridge is a new civilian outfit that serves regions outside of the UCA (United Cities of America). They are primarily funded by a "generous patron with plenty of access to capital and tech" of whom Fragile has yet to meet face-to-face. As humanity still resides within the brink of collapse and extinction, Drawbridge’s motto, "Both stick and rope, to protect and connect. Together, for tomorrow" serves to instill hope and inspiration for a connected future of mankind.
Sam is recruited into the Drawbridge by Fragile, as she welcomes and briefs him onboard the DHV Magellan ship. The ship serves as the outfit’s main base of operations, of which will also be Sam’s. It’s equipped with top-of-the-line weapons for Sam to choose from to prepare for his next journey.
Before embarking on his new mission, an enigmatic puppet (uniquely animated on twos) that sits on Fragile’s shoulder requested to come along. He’s said to have "knowledge and experience [that] will probably come in hand down the road." Sam almost latches him on behind his buttocks before attaching him in front, as a nod to God of War’s severed-headed god Mimir who dangles behind Kratos, offering knowledge and advice.
Humanity is Still in Danger
The main reason that Sam must reassume his responsibilities lies in the fact that the Death Stranding is not over, and humanity continues to be on the brink of extinction. The UCA has been connected throughout America thanks to Sam’s previous effects, and now he must do so again for the rest of the world. Though it seems like it, The UCA does not want to expand its borders, but rather wants to bring new regions into their network, providing an interconnected global reach.
Drawbridge’s mission is to connect regions outside of the UCA, where Fragile will be the acting commander, and Sam will be on the ground doing the legwork. Fragile’s statement of "It’s the same deal as America. The people here are all spread out. Cut off from one another" implies that Sam will be tasked with bringing the world together across different countries and regions, but no other country has yet been confirmed besides his first mission in Mexico.
Though their journey has world-ending stakes, Sam and Fragile still spare time to look for answers and what they can find on BB-28, otherwise known as Lou. However, on his detour to return seemingly to The Ruined Factory, Sam is ambushed and overpowered by Higgs and his men, who has an all-new look in his facial markings and armor. Higgs monologues a bit, until Sam outright accuses him of killing Lou. As Higgs was about to explain, his men were all taken down by an unknown person clad in a full-mech suit that has shades of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s Raiden and Sam. Higgs engages in combat with the unknown savior by revving up his guitar connected to his suit to shoot out bolts of electricity.
The fight cuts off, and the trailer ends on an ominous and intriguing twist as Sam rests in his quarters. Apparently, Lou was "flagged for disposal and subsequently incinerated four years ago. Long ago before you and Lou first met." Suddenly, things have gotten more perplexing for our hero, as he struggles to balance his duties to connect the world, and his personal ambitions to find "Lou."
