Cyberpunk 2 Development Updates
Now in Pre-Production

Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel has now entered pre-production and is officially named "Cyberpunk 2." In an article posted on CD Projekt Red’s (CDPR) website on May 28, the developers announced that the game has now taken the next step in development.
According to CDPR, the Cyberpunk team finished the project’s conceptual phase last week. They stated, "As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to preproduction."

Pre-production is a vital part of a project’s initial planning phase, as the game’s core concept is conceived, refined, and documented before full-scale development. Major adjustments and changes may still take place, and it could take years before a game proceeds to the next stage.
As the project progresses further, fans will likely hear more updates on how the sequel will look. Last week, R. Talsorian Games founder and game designer Mike Pondsmith shared that Cyberpunk 2’s new city can be described as "Chicago Gone Wrong". Beyond this, no new information has been revealed.
Release May Be Far Ahead

During CDPR’s Q1 2025 earnings conference on May 28, the studio clarified the expectations everyone has on Cyberpunk 2’s release window. In the investor call, CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski addressed the concern that the game could launch in 2030 or even early 2031.
Nowakowski explained, "I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average." He has neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of the speculated release window.
"Having said that, keep in mind that each project is unique, and there are many variables that influence the final outcome. So I will not lead you into specific years, but yes, this is pretty much how it looks," Nowakowski stated.

Cyberpunk 2’s release is still far off, but CDPR’s latest updates gave fans a good sign that the critically acclaimed sci-fi shooter’s sequel is gaining traction. For now, players would have to wait and see the improvements and optimizations CDPR has made for its upcoming Switch 2 release.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is set to be released on Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. It includes the full base game, all the updates since its launch, and the critically-acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below!
