Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will exclusively be released on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. 2K Games and Firaxis Games announced on February 8, 2025 during the Civ World Summit Event that Civilization 7 VR will be the franchise’s first entry into virtual and mixed reality gaming.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk shared his excitement in a blog post on 2k’s website about the upcoming release of the game. We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Shirk said.
Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett expressed his confidence in Civ 7 VR coming to Meta and said With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality,
He added, Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Despite Civ 7 releasing on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be released on PSVR2 as of writing.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR will put players in a Command Table to maneuver around the world to strategize and play the game. The game lets the players “peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units, like a tabletop game come to life.”
Civ 7 VR can be played in either immersive virtual reality or mixed reality, with players being able to freely switch between modes. According to 2k Games, “In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum as they look out onto a vista personalized to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space.”
The game will also be available in single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets can join a game. Players can fill their games with AI-controlled opponents and collaborate with their friends to defeat them or face off with human opponents to see who will stand the test of time.
During games, players can see their friends and opponents in VR and MR across the Command Table as their chosen world leader. Online multiplayer requires a 2k Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games responded to the player feedback they received during Civ 7’s early access period. Civ 7’s official Twitter (X) page announced that the team would work on the issues mentioned by the players. Civ 7’s Advanced Access began on February 6, 2025 for players who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition. The game received mixed reviews on Steam since its early access release and fans pointed out issues regarding the game’s User Interface, making it difficult for players to find key gameplay information.
To alleviate the current issues the game has, Firaxis Games made a statement on their future updates and plans. One of their main priorities would be UI improvements, “making UI interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, fixing areas of polish like formatting, and more.”
There are also community-requested features that they want to implement such as: adding teams to multiplayer games, a wider variety of map types, and more. Additionally, Firaxis Games promised to deploy a quality-of-life update in March, focusing on “quality-of-life UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance and improvement, adjustments to diplomacy and crises, plus additional bug fixes.”
Civilization 7 VR is expected to be released in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S with no specific release date announced. On the other hand, Civilization 7 is now available on early access and will have its worldwide release on February 11, 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
