Civilization 7 devs recommended that players, both new or experienced, play the tutorial section to get a general idea of the game. Read on to learn more about why the tutorial section is important!
Civ 7 Devs Recommendation to Players and Introduction of New Victory Conditions
New and Veteran Civ Players Should Not Skip Tutorial
Civilization 7 (Civ 7) creative director Ed Beach recommended that new and veteran players should go through the tutorial section first before diving into conquering multiple civilizations on the game’s Steam Dev Diary #8, posted on January 31, 2025.
"When you launch into your first game of Civilization VII, we'll turn the Tutorial on for you," Beach explained. "The Tutorial is designed to provide tips and explanations exactly when you first encounter something new. Fans experienced with earlier Civ titles may scoff at the idea of playing with the Tutorial on, but with so many of our game systems having received upgrades and revisions, we really do recommend sticking with the Tutorial for your first full campaign through our three Ages."
The tutorial section includes four advisors that guide players through different systems and mechanics of the game. "If it's too much to take in all at once, we suggest listening to only a single Advisor at a time," Beach suggested.
Aside from the tutorial, Beach also explained that they set the map size and type to small and continent plus to help players learn the "ins and outs of Civ VII." Having a small map size with few islands to discover later on allows players to manage their relationships with their neighboring empires and learn the new game mechanics of the game.
If players mastered the basics of the game, Beach mentioned that they can turn the tutorial off and switch to "Only Warnings," setting the advisors to pop up when an issue is about to happen. Beach insisted players use this setting, as "even our internal team at Firaxis that knows this game so well plays with these warnings enabled!"
Civ 7 Victory Conditions Rebalanced
One of the major changes in Civ 7 is the Victory Conditions. Beach also explained this new feature in the same Dev Diary on Steam.
Victory Conditions in Civ 7 have been changed to avoid the unfair advantages of certain victory types found in the previous game, Civ 6. In the latest installment, Legacy Paths are introduced wherein completing a set of milestones in the first two Ages grants a bonus to Culture, Science, Economics, or Military. Obtaining Legacy Points from any of these four speeds up the progress of achieving victory. In the third Age, completing a Legacy Path unlocks one of the new victory types, where players must build or complete a project to win a match.
Meanwhile, in Civ 6, players can win the game through Science, Culture, Domination, Religion, Diplomacy, and Score. In the past, the most viable option to secure a victory was through Science and Military, as they could just finish a series of late-game scientific projects or build a massive army to conquer every opponent’s capital. On the other hand, other victory types are harder to achieve because they can easily be countered by enemy players.
That being said, here is a rundown of all the victory types in Civ 7:
⚫︎ Cultural Victory - Build World’s Fair Wonder
⚫︎ Economic Victory - Build World Bank Office in every capital
⚫︎ Military Victory - Complete Operation Ivy Project
⚫︎ Scientific Victory - Complete Space Flight Project
With a more standard approach to winning a match, Victories in Civ 7 allows players to try different Victory Conditions instead of focusing on particular ones.
Civ 7-Inspired Controllers Made by Xbox
Ahead of the game’s launch, the developers unveiled two Civ 7-inspired controllers made by Xbox Design Lab on February 4, 2025. These are the Elite and Standard controllers, featuring the black, white, and gold color theme of the game.
The Elite controller, priced at $149.99 USD, has much more intricate and customizable designs with rubberized grips. The body and buttons can be customized according to color or design. The Call of Duty 6 and Fallout themes can also be applied to the controller’s body. For a more personalized design, buyers can also have a laser-engraved message at the bottom center of the controller and add accessories like a Paddles Pack or Carrying Case + Charging Pack.
The Standard controller has a base price of $69.99 USD, sporting a much simpler design than its elite counterpart. This one shares the same customization scheme but adds the rubberized grips as an optional attachment to the controller. Additionally, accessories are not available to purchase for this controller.
Interested buyers can customize and preview these controllers on the Xbox Design Lab website. Take note that customization and add-ons increase the costs of these controllers.
