Capcom Bucks the Layoffs Trend By Increasing Salaries for Employees in Japan

Capcom, the renowned video game company behind hit franchises Resident Evil and Street Fighter, has announced significant salary increases for both new graduate hires and current employees in Japan. Read on to learn more about Capcom's announcement.

Capcom Increases Salaries for Employees in Japan

New Graduate Hires' Salaries Increase by 28%, Current Employees' by 5%

Beginning in the 2025 fiscal year, Capcom stated it will raise the starting salary for new graduates by 28%. Currently set at ¥235,000 per month (approx. $1,560), the new starting salary will jump to ¥300,000 per month (approx. $2,000).

On the other hand, current employees across the board can anticipate a 5% average salary increase during the 2024 fiscal year. However, the specifics of this raise were not fully detailed. Additionally, both current employees and new hires during the 2024 fiscal year will receive a "one-time special payment" as a token of appreciation and investment in their future contributions to the company.

Capcom explained that this increase was done to attract exceptional talent and further invest in its workforce. The company implemented various initiatives since 2022 to support its Human Resources (HR) investment strategy. These initiatives include restructuring HR operations, appointing a Chief HR Officer, a bonus system, and an employee stock-based compensation system.

"With this increase in starting salary, Capcom is pursuing further investment in human capital and the acquisition of exceptional talent," read Capcom's official statement. "Capcom will work to address the issues facing our society while aiming improve its corporate value and establishing a relationship of trust with employees and stakeholders."

Capcom continues to rev up its prosperous financial performance. With strong results in the first half of its current fiscal year, the company remains on track to achieve its 11th consecutive year of operating income growth. The company currently ranks #88 in the top 300 richest companies in Japan, according to data from business news media Tokyo Keizai.

However, Capcom maintains a prudent approach to financial planning. The company's projected consolidated business results for the ongoing fiscal year ending on March 31, 2024, stay the same at 140,000 units (million yen) as the company previously forecast.
