Hasbro Searches for 'Right' Partners for Next Baldur's Gate
Future Baldur's Gate Games Cover Various Genres and Platforms
Following up its predecessor after over two decades, Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3) rose to critical acclaim, garnering numerous awards and accolades worldwide. While BG3 devs Larian Studios has made it clear that they won't be returning to continue work on the D&D-themed RPG series, Wizards of the Coast, the owner of D&D, is keen on continuing the saga. Hasbro, parent company of the IP owner, confirmed its plans for future Baldur's Gate projects.
Speaking to PCGamer following the BAFTA awards, Hasbro Sr. VP of Digital Strategy & Licensing Eugene Evans stated that the company is committed to exploring the future of the Baldur's Gate franchise. He remarked that the sequel wouldn't take another 25 years to materialize. However, he stressed that the company remains focused on finding the right approach and partner.
"We're going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur's Gate," Evans told the news site. "We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don't rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering."
Moreover, Evans confirmed that they "have been investing in new D&D game development." These games will appear over the next five years and cover various genres and platforms. "I think there's room within the D&D universe for many expressions of what D&D is all about," he said, "as long as we remain true to the things that people love about D&D and keep it authentic to the IP."
BG3 Characters Could Appear in Future Installments
In the wake of Larian Studios' decision to step back from the series after BG3's success, concerns arose regarding the fate of the beloved characters of the multi-awarded game. Evans acknowledged these concerns and hinted at the possibility of seeing these characters in Baldur's Gate's next iterations.
He commended the impact of the characters Larian Studios created and remarked that they "are now essentially part of D&D canon." He continued, "I think it's too early to express specifics and I think that there's a much bigger question about how we approach Baldur's Gate in the future, but I would like to think that all of those characters, for the sake of the fans, could potentially appear in future products."
