Valve Dev Shared Insights about SteamOS and Windows

Provide Assurance SteamOS is Not Out to Kill Windows

Pierre-Loup Griffais, one of the developers of SteamOS, shared that they do not intend to kill Windows during an interview with a French site, Frandroid, on January 9, 2025.

During the lengthy interview, Frandroid asked Griffais "Is SteamOS the Windows killer developed by Valve?" The question is in context with Valve president Gabe Newell’s accusation last 2012 that Microsoft’s Windows 8 is killing the ecosystem with its new UI and built-in store.

"I don't think the goal is to have a certain market share, or to push users away from Windows. If a user has a good experience on Windows, there's no problem," Griffais shared. "I think it's interesting to develop a system that has different goals and priorities, and if it becomes a good alternative for a typical desktop user, that's great. It gives them choice. But it's not a goal in itself to convert users who already have a good experience."

That being said, adding SteamOS to PCs and handheld devices gives additional options to users, especially if they prioritize games.

The Unveiling of Lenovo’s Steam-Powered Handheld Device

Microsoft heavily dominated PC operating systems with its Windows series, with Windows 11 as its latest iteration. However, Lenovo recently unveiled in CES 2025 that its latest handheld device, Lenovo Legion GO S, will be operated by SteamOS. With this operating system, users can now directly access Steam and its large library of games.

Currently, this marks the first time SteamOS, the operating system of the Steam Deck, is available on another device. However, it is not yet competitive with Microsoft’s Windows OS in the digital market. However, Griffais mentioned that their work is not done yet and "it’s going to continue to expand over time."

Microsoft might need to rethink their business strategy once SteamOS becomes compatible with more devices.

Microsoft’s Plans to Bring the Best of Windows and Xbox

During the same event, Microsoft’s VP of "Next Generation" Jason Ronald also shared the company’s response to Valve’s plans by combining "the best of Xbox and Windows together."

With the ongoing handheld race, dominated by Switch and Steam Deck, Microsoft is bringing their A-game by prioritizing the "player and their library at the center of the experience." However, there is not enough information about how Microsoft can achieve this plan as their handheld is still under development.
