Assassin’s Creed's former Lead Producer Jade Raymond argues that AI in gaming development will be inevitable, based on her latest interview with Edge Magazine. Learn more about the dev’s ideas about AI and more.
AI Content in Gaming Inevitable
Companies Already Investing in AI
Jade Raymond, former lead producer of Assassin’s Creed and current head of Haven Studios spoke alongside Everquest 2 co-director Raph Koster and claimed that AI content in gaming is inevitable as companies invest in it, saying that AI content generation might be valuable in the initial phases of development and could offset growing budgets.
Edge Magazine spoke with Raymond alongside Everquest 2 co-director Raph Koster andboth game industry veterans about the future of AI in game development, and both said they believe that there are huge issues in the industry that can be mitigated, or even solved by using AI.
Raymond Thinks AI Will Solve Manpower Issues
In the interview, Raymond mentioned that Haven Studio was investing in research and development of generative AI and machine learning. She argued that these technologies will eventually help game devs and "unlock more creativity from developers and players alike." Raymond added that AAA game development is expanding rapidly in its scope, from "teams of 50 people [and] two years to teams of hundreds [and] more than ten years."
Koster Looks at AI’s Cost-Cutting Potential and Public Perception
In addition to Raymond’s point of view, Everquest 2's Raph Koster explained that there is a budding conflict between game sizes, scopes, and budgets. While AI-generated content is heavily criticized and media industries are extremely wary of it, Koster believes that studios will gravitate towards its development because of one crucial thing: cost-cutting.
Koster emphasizes: "Developers hate it, many players dislike it, there's a general current against it, and the money is still going to drive absolutely everybody to do it, because otherwise the cost curves are not sustainable."
