Crimson Desert New Gameplay Trailer Released

Interests Are Renewed With Sky-High Expectations

Among the many trailers featured during Gamescom 2023 is one for an open-world RPG developed by Pearl Abyss, the team that made the popular Black Desert Online MMO.

Since being officially announced in late 2019, there had been a notable drought of information regarding the game, save for the few videos they released over two years ago. But the developers have finally decided to break their silence and release a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming title. Crimson Desert.

What does the trailer showcase that has got us all excited?

Fishing

Image

Ah, yes. No RPG experience is complete nowadays without having the option to go to the nearest body of water with a fishing rod in hand. We're not yet sure how fishing will tie into the game, aside from the fish obviously acting as healing items or possible cooking ingredients. But it does seem to present players with a way to spend their time leisurely, away from all the action-packed and bloody combat Crimson Desert promises.

Petting

Image

That's right. You’ll be able to pet cats and dogs in this game. Truly groundbreaking stuff. You can also pick them up from the ground and possibly cuddle them! Crimson Desert is looking like a GOTY competitor already. No, this isn’t sarcasm.

Drifting

Image

One of the strangest things, and possibly most entertaining, we saw in the trailer was the scene where the protagonist was riding his horse full-gallop. But then, he made a sharp left turn. And what did the horse do? It slid on the ground, in a manner that looked like it was drifting.

While it certainly isn't as iconic as a train performing multi-track drifting from Densha de D, a parody doujin of the legendary Initial D series, having a horse that can bank and slide on turns is undoubtedly an exciting prospect and we can't wait to try it.

Fighting

And, of course, we arrive at the crucial (though arguably less exciting than fishing and petting dogs) aspect of the trailers: Crimson Desert's combat. It resembles, in a way, a combination of Final Fantasy XVI, Assassin's Creed, and Nier:Automata's combat systems. It's a gritty, in-your-face experience, fighting against bandits and giant mechanical dragons that's slightly reminiscent of the developer's other title, Black Desert Online. It also looks like there will be scripted fights based on QTEs.

Oh, and did we mention that you could yeet (throw) enemies? Imagine the possibilities!

Aside from those particularly striking features, the game will also allow players to scale walls (think Assassin's Creed), hijack carriages, glide through the air, and... kidnap sheep? Man, if the protagonist went off with a baby goat instead, we could have made a good pun. But overall, it looks to be an incredible game to keep an eye out for!

While the trailer doesn’t hint at a possible release date, we expect the game to drop sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. But all of that is just speculation until the developers officially announce a date. It will be available for the PC, on the current-gen consoles in PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and even on the PS4 and Xbox One for us gamers on a budget.
