Xbox 360 Store is Shutting Down in July 2024: What You Need to Know

Image

The Xbox 360 shop will close in July 2024. Learn more about what will happen to purchased Xbox 360 games, what components will be kept, and changes to entertainment apps.

Xbox 360 Ceases Operations on 2024

End of an Era for Xbox 360 Games and DLCs

Image
On July 29, 2024, the Xbox ecosystem will undergo a huge transition, signaling the end of an era for the Xbox 360. Microsoft has stated that it would discontinue support for purchasing new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace directly from the console.

The Evolution of Xbox 360 Content

Image
The Xbox 360 has been a favored platform since its release in 2005, introducing players to various ground-breaking games, DLCs, and entertainment alternatives. It has generated a devoted player base over the years and given hours and hours of enjoyment. But as technology develops and Microsoft emphasizes its more current gaming platforms, like the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the larger Xbox ecosystem, changes are required to improve user experiences and streamline services.

What Changes and What Won't

Image
Microsoft will end the ability to purchase new games, DLCs, and entertainment items directly through the device from the Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace on July 29, 2024. All Xbox 360 games and DLC that gamers have already purchased can still be played. The games and DLCs will remain playable on Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. This change is consistent with Microsoft's policy of focusing services and resources on newer hardware while maintaining accessibility for previously purchased Xbox 360 titles.

The silver lining is that the backward compatibility program will continue after July 29, 2024. On Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com, players can still access a sizable library of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games.

Additionally, as long as the game publishers support the online servers, multiplayer connections for Xbox 360 titles will remain viable. This makes sure that the social aspect of gaming, which is a critical component of the Xbox experience, is alive and well.

Shifts in Entertainment Options

Image
One significant component of this transition is the removal of the Microsoft Movies & TV app from the Xbox 360 after July 29, 2024. This removal reflects Microsoft's preference for more modern platforms. Movies and TV series can still be accessed on Windows devices running Windows 10 or later, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, even if the software will no longer work on the console.
