Strives For Its Identity
Gotham Knights, an open-world, third-person action RPG developed by WB Games Montreal, introduced players to the Bat Family, a new generation of DC Super Heroes that rose up to safeguard Gotham City following the death of Batman.
Gotham Knights heavily deviated from the renowned Arkham series, a move that was met with both support and controversy when it was released last year. Many fans yearned for the cherished aspects of the older Batman games. However, doing so allowed it to carve out its distinct identity in a new continuity separate from Rocksteady's Arkhamverse.
It was a risky move to remove Batman as the one of the primary protagonists. However, this move allowed Gotham Knights to highlight the Bat Family by including playable characters such as Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. Each individual hero brought their particular talents and experiences to the forefront, offering a novel viewpoint on the world of the Gotham Knight.
Modders Bring Batman To The Game
Despite the game's primarily unfavorable reviews and some fans' dismay with how different it was from the Arkham series, there were devoted players who continued to explore Gotham Knights' potential. Modders, in particular, took it upon themselves to reintroduce Batman into Gotham's streets, highlighting the missed opportunity of having the Caped Crusader as a critical character.
One well-known mod that gained popularity was Gotham Knights - Batman: The Enemy Within,
made by YouTuber SpaceDasher, which substituted Robin with Batman. The mod's reveal trailer demonstrated how the game might have been had Batman been a primary character rather than just a postmortem presence.
Some fans had hoped for some prequel DLC so that Batman might be a playable character in the Gotham Knights realm. So far, no further DLC have been announced by the game's publisher, WB Games, but there are speculations that a DLC is on the way since Gotham Knights have been getting updates on Steam in the last two weeks.
