President Says To Look Forward With Reboots of Classic Sega Games
Sonic May Be Getting More Reboots In The Future
Sega has been making waves with its iconic blue hedgehog, Sonic, for decades. Recently, the company has been exploring the concept of reboots and remakes to breathe new life into its beloved franchises.
In a candid interview with Famitsu, SEGA's President and Chief Operations Officer, Yukio Sugino, shed light on the exciting future of Sonic the Hedgehog and other IPs.
President Sugino expressed his enthusiasm for the progress of Sonic Frontier, a new installment in the Sonic series. He lauded the development team's efforts in making the game bigger and better, which paid off with higher sales than initially projected.
Additionally, the release of the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2
garnered impressive box office earnings, surpassing 57 billion yen worldwide. As SEGA's signature IP, Sonic's success is a positive sign that the beloved blue hedgehog is headed in the right direction.
Reboots and New Installments
President Sugino clarified the distinction between reboots and new installments within SEGA's gaming landscape in the interview. When asked about the August release of Samba de Amigo: Party Central, he explained that it is not a reboot but rather a new installment in the series.
On the other hand, Sonic Superstars
marks a return to 2D action. Although it is a new title, it incorporates some reboot-like measures. The distinction highlights SEGA's creative approach to revitalizing its IPs while preserving their essence.
SEGA's decision-making process for reboots and remakes revolves around selecting the most appropriate timing for each IP. President Sugino emphasized that careful consideration is given to determine the best approach for each franchise.
As Sonic holds a special place as SEGA's flagship IP, the company is actively contemplating reboots. It remakes in addition to developing new titles. This strategic approach aims to strike a balance between nostalgia and innovation.
SEGA Saturn's Mini Version
The interview touched upon SEGA Saturn, a beloved gaming console of the past. President Sugino revealed that despite the console's impressive performance, creating a mini version of it remains a challenge. Nonetheless, SEGA's research team is actively exploring the technological possibilities, keeping fans hopeful for a nostalgic surprise in the future.
Sonic Superstars: A Glimpse into the Future
President Sugino couldn't contain his excitement when discussing Sonic Superstars,
a major upcoming title. Describing the gameplay as incorporating several fresh elements, including multiplayer features, he highlighted the enthusiasm of those involved in the project.
The game's novel direction promises to captivate fans and newcomers alike, making it a much-anticipated addition to the Sonic series. Sonic Superstars is announced to be released in Fall 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game was announced on Nintendo Showcase last June 2023.
