In an interview with famitsu, Sega President Yukio Sugino was asked on the possibilities of a Sega Saturn Mini. Read on to find out more of what the Sega president has to say.
Sega Saturn Mini Would Be Difficult to Produce Because of Its Hardware
While the Sega president did not give a flat out yes or no when it came to making a mini Sega Saturn, he did offer further insight into the difficulty of making a Sega Saturn mini. Yukio Sugino shared that one of the main issues of turning the Sega Saturn into a mini console or handheld console is the hardware itself, being a high-performance machine, requiring more power than Sony's PlayStation 1.
Yukio Sugino states: “The Sega Saturn is surprisingly high performance, so the difficulty of miniaturization is also high.”
Although difficult to produce, Sega will not rule out the possibility
With the changes and developments in making games, the Sega president also opened up about what he prioritizes in business. He also laid out his plans for Sega in the interview regarding the work frameset that Sega has.
While acknolweding what Sega fans ask for, Yukio Sugino also sets fans' expectations saying he is in the loop with what Sega users want and would be open to the possibility of developing a Sega Saturn mini with a team of people who love the console when the situation lets them.
Yukio Sugino states: “I'd like to think about it when we're in a situation where we can openly develop it together with people who have always loved the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast.”
Producing Sega Saturn Mini will also be costly but Sega promises to look at demands
Reproducing the hardware and miniaturizing them for production would be a ton of additional expense, the Sega president says. There were various economic disruptions that happened in 2022 that Yukio Sugino listed that factor into production of not only games, but as well as console, however he says even in the face of this headwind, everyone still needs entertainment content.
Yukio Sugino shares another sentiment with famitsu:
“During the three years of this corona disaster, more and more people are playing SEGA's works with the feeling that "I haven't played many games recently, but it's been a long time since I've played games.”
